IM A LITTLE CONFUSED ABOUT THE BULLDOG STANDERD, THE JAW JUST CONFUSES ME. LOL
MY GIRLS JAW IS TURNED UP VERY FAR FROM THE MOUTH, IS THIS A FAULT?
SOMETIMES IT CAUSES HER TOUNG HANG OUT LOL
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TAIL, WHY DOES ALOT OF BULLDOGS TODAY HAVE SHORT TAILS OR INVERTED TAILS.
IS A INVERTED TAIL GENETIC, AND WHAT CAN WE DO AS BULLDOG BREEDERS TO STOP ALL UNWANTED GENETIC FAULTS, LIKE FOR EXAMPLE, SKIN PROBLEMS ETC, I PERSONALLY LIKE A LONG TAIL, BUT NOT TOO LONG. MY GIRL SHE DONT EVEN HAVE A TAIL?
WHEN SHES HAPPY SHE WILL WIGGLE HER BUTT BACK AND FORTH, LOL
I have been reading the post below and I love reading everything about our breed.
And I am a little confused about how we have breed our Bulldogs today and I think none of them could do the job of bull baiting ( nevermind we wouldn't want them to ) .
Why are we looking at the standard and comparing them to the Bulldogs of the past... Aren't our's healthier and have long lifespans ?
I am not ranting or anything but just curious about the dicussion about the dogs of the bullbaiting time ?
Thanks,
HiDan,
When I studied the standard with Flo she said that the character of the head depended on the balance of proportion between the skull and foreface, and try to remember that a brick shaped skull is most desireable. The problem is every one has a different interpetation. When they say short faced if it was as short as they are today the dog could of never held on to the bull. Know one seems to read history just the standard but you must put the blue print of this dog together with the job of bull baiting in mind.
am writing this to share part of history that Flo explained to me she said if you look at your scale of points when you see the 5 & 6 point features they were important to the bulldogs survival in the bull baiting ring.
Properties and Symmetry 5 points This gave the proper balance or he could not have stayed on the bull
The nose 6 points The nose had to be opened or he would of suffocated.
The Jaw 5 points This is how he clung to life.
In reading the discussions on line about what is called for in the Standard, I find it interesting how many "catch phrases" that either aren't in the Standard or are there but are used to describe a different attribute are used. Additionally, some terms are used interchangeably that are actually used to describe distinct features in the Standard.
Some examples:
apex and occiput - Both terms are used in the Standards description of the skull, but they are not the same thing and shouldnt be used interchangeably.
Any results yet on the St. Louis shows.
Hi everyone - I need your help...
Two of my dogs escaped from my fenced yard early this week, and are lost. I live outside Chandler, OK. I have done all the things - flyers everywhere, talked to all the neighbors, the mail man, the police, ads in the local paper, etc...all with NO results. They have not been seen since a very short time after they escaped. I fear that someone has picked them up.
