Bulldogs Today and Bulldogs of the past

I have been reading the post below and I love reading everything about our breed.

And I am a little confused about how we have breed our Bulldogs today and I think none of them could do the job of bull baiting ( nevermind we wouldn't want them to ) .

Why are we looking at the standard and comparing them to the Bulldogs of the past... Aren't our's healthier and have long lifespans ?

I am not ranting or anything but just curious about the dicussion about the dogs of the bullbaiting time ?

Thanks,

Brett & Christy McDonough

I disagree, many of the great Bulldogs I have seen

could do what they have been bred for. There are many Bulldogs who couldn't but IMO those are the ones that don't meet the standard.

My biggest beef is that too many people keep there Bulldogs far to fat! The standard is 25kg's/55lbs and a great Bulldog will be close to this.

knowledge s power

A handler told me if I was to show the bulldog I should know the histoy then read the standard & points so when you show this dog you know your good quailties so your eye will be looking at it. Lets say you have a great head & jaw the judges eye goes to the part you present.

I was told of all the breeds the bulldog is the hardest to show. I know I showed Chows Standard Poodles, Irish Setters & it took time with great bulldoggers to teach me at times I almost gave up. I know a good show dog must have ring presence. It takes alot of patience.

To teach a dog you have to spend short session and make it fun. When you take him in the ring do not be to strict then he will look foreward to it.

Good Luck

Just a Thought

A celebrated breeder, judge and writer Enno Meyer wrote of all domestic animals, the bulldog probably represents the greatest departure from nature’s original plan for a canine. I found this in a book Bulldogs : An Owner’s Companion. Do you all believe that Enno was right? Really haven't the bulldogs we love today been shaped and molded into what we want them to be, really a freak of nature, with the AI's and c-sections they couldn't survive without our intervention. It seems to me that there really isn't another breed that has changed its form so much from its beginning. We always see pictures of bulldogs of the past that resemble pit bulls when today they have a completely different appearance. The bulldog standard was approved by AKC July 20, 1976 and still remains the same today even though it appears to me the breed is constantly changing. I leave you with this, is it at out hands that our beloved breed is being molded into something that fits our personal preferences? Shouldn't we have a responsibility as Bulldog lovers to preserve what little bit of history is left in our breed and sacrifice our need to change everything to fit our idealistic view of the perfect bulldog.

Like reading the history...

But the Bulldog of today and the Standard are much different.
