HiDan,
When I studied the standard with Flo she said that the character of the head depended on the balance of proportion between the skull and foreface, and try to remember that a brick shaped skull is most desireable. The problem is every one has a different interpetation. When they say short faced if it was as short as they are today the dog could of never held on to the bull. Know one seems to read history just the standard but you must put the blue print of this dog together with the job of bull baiting in mind.
The bulldog has a brick shape head, a pear shape body all of a heap with a dour expression. This is how old time bulldoggers described him.
I saw many picures of length to foreface but when I showed the correct picture I was told they do not breed dogs like that anymore. This is a problem as we do not breed to correct faults if we did you would be seeing a brick shape to the head instead of rounded & to short of a face. Kim
and dont forget.....
A standard modern brick measures 8.46 inches long by 4.04 inches in breadth and 2.56 inches deep. The first two measurements have remained fairly constant over the years, but the depth has changed. BTW this is a reliable way of aging a brick building. English bricks of the early nineteenth century had an average size of 9 inches in length, 4 ½ inches in width and 2 ¾ inches in thickness.
