Your Bulldog is part of your family and you want to bring him or her along with you wherever you go. This may include a family vacation or a weekend getaway. Traveling with your Bulldog can be a rewarding experience if you have all the essentials your dog needs. As you know your Bulldog is like a baby and requires special things that make him or her happy at home, the same goes for traveling. Below is a list of essential items you will need for a safe, happy trip with your Bulldog.
· Reservations – If necessary make hotel and airline reservations for your dog. There are specific requirements that need to be met for each individual airline so be sure you strictly adhere to the rules to assure a safe flight for your dog. Hotel reservations are becoming easier for dog owners every day. There are plenty of hotels that happily accept pets. However, they too have rules such as always keeping your dog on a leash when in public areas.
· Travel Kennel – Whether you are traveling by car, train or plane you will need a travel kennel for your Bulldog. It needs to be large and wide enough for him or her to lie down, stand up and turn around comfortably. The latch needs to fit securely to ensure your dog does not escape during the trip.
· Food, Water and Medication – Pack enough food and water that will last a few days longer than the trip. Since Bulldogs are sensitive to heat and prone to developing heatstroke, bring along plenty of fresh bottled water. Don’t forget the portable dog bowls for convenience. If your dog takes medication to maintain good health or for a specific illness, speak to the veterinarian about the proper amount needed for the length of the trip.
· Leash, Collar and Identification Tags – While your Bulldog most-likely has these items already, you will want to make sure the information on the identification tags is up to date. Always include your dog’s name, your cell phone number and any medical emergency details. This will assure that if your dog is lost he or she will be returned to you. Also make sure the leash and collar are in good shape to avoid your dog getting loose and running off.
· Toys – While toys may not seem like a necessity, it actually is very important to your Bulldog. Some Bulldogs get attached to certain toys and may seem nervous without having it close by. Providing your dog with a variety of toys during the trip will keep his or her mind occupied and captivated.
If you are taking a road trip make sure the vehicle you are driving has air conditioning to keep your Bulldog comfortable and lessen the risk of heatstroke. Stop along the way and let your dog get out and stretch his or her legs and get some fresh air. Always keep your Bulldog on a leash for safety. Enjoy your trip with your Bulldog and remember to take the essentials needed to make your travels safe and happy!
