I am in shock as I write this. Clovis's lab report is not good. She has a Grade III mast cell tumor that is poorly differentiated. Grade III is the worst of the three grades. My vet said, however, that there is a new chemotherapy drug called Palladia that has had good results. Is anyone familiar with Palladia? Thanks.

Very sorry to hear this Gary
Please give Clovis hugs from me and my thoughts and prayers are with you.
It was on her right hip, but was surgically removed
about three weeks ago. The biopsy report says that it "appears" that the tumor was completely excised. But Clovis also has the worst grade, a Grade III.

I saw a few sites that were asking for dogs with mast cell tumors to be in a trial, I'd question Pfizer about this to see if there is anything close to you like this. The drug is pretty new so you never know.
The drug looks promising but I'd question what other options are and what their success rate are. They claim this is the only drug specifically for dogs but human drugs have been used in dogs and I'm sure there is data on their effectiveness and side effects in dogs.
Positive thoughts to you and Clovis.

Gary....I have no input on the drug.....

Oh Gary...:(
I am not overly familiar with this type of cancer or the drugs used to treat them. I would make drastic diet changes immediately and involve a holistic vet as well.

I wish Clovis a full recovery.

UPDATE 2-FDA approves Pfizer cancer drug for dogs

* Palladia approved for canine mast cell tumors
Stocks | Regulatory News | Global Markets
* Pfizer to begin selling drug in early 2010
* First cancer treatment specifically designed for dogs (Adds therapy details, no comment on price)
By Bill Berkrot
NEW YORK, June 3 (Reuters) - Pfizer Inc's (PFE.N) efforts to develop new cancer drugs have yielded a breakthrough -- for dogs.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first cancer treatment specifically designed to treat dogs, Pfizer and the agency announced on Wednesday.
The drug Palladia was approved to treat canine mast cell tumors, a potentially serious type of cancer that accounts for about 20 percent of canine skin tumors, and one that can spread to other parts of the body, including lymph nodes, if not treated.
All cancer drugs now used in veterinary medicine originally were developed for use in humans and are not specifically approved for use in animals, the FDA said.
"This cancer drug approval for dogs is an important step forward for veterinary medicine," Bernadette Dunham, director of FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in a statement.
"Prior to this approval, veterinarians had to rely on human oncology drugs without knowledge of how safe or effective they would be for dogs," she said.
Pfizer said it would begin selling Palladia in early 2010, but will make the oral drug available to certain veterinary oncology specialists prior to that.
Palladia works by killing tumor cells and by cutting off the blood supply to the tumor.
The pill must be taken every other day and the dog will likely have to be on the therapy for several months or longer, depending on tumor response, Pfizer said.
Pfizer declined to divulge the cost of the treatment or to forecast what annual Palladia sales might be. The world's biggest drugmaker said it will likely announce the price of the drug sometime this summer.
Treatment with new cancer drugs for humans tends to cost tens of thousands of dollars per patient, and the majority of pet owners do not have health insurance for their dogs.
In clinical trials, some 60 percent of dogs treated with Palladia, known chemically as toceranib, had their tumors disappear, shrink or stop growing, Pfizer said.
Pfizer Animal Health estimates 1.2 million new canine cancer cases are reported in the United States every year.
Pfizer shares fell 14 cents, or 0.9 percent, to $14.84 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. (Reporting by Bill Berkrot, editing by Matthew Lewis, Richard Chang)

Sorry to hear the news was not better ):
I am not familiar with mast cell tumors or their treatment but sounds like your vet is trying the best path available. Will be thinking of you and Clovis and hoping for a full recovery!
Gary, so sorry to hear that...
I haven't heard specifically of Palladia but I know chemo can do wonders for these cancers. Are you going with your vet or do you have an oncologist that can treat her? They didn't give us a grade on Ollie MCT but the vet said it was non agressive and slow growing, so no chemo for him, just surgical removal. Prayers coming for Clovis.
Kathy, Ollie and Chester
Oh Gary!
I guess I missed a lot during my two weeks away from BDW. Where does Clovis have a tumor. Is it operable.
When I was going through the whole eye thing with Stella, we considered many chemotherapies (although her tumors weren't actually cancerous) and we ended up trying one (it wasn't palladia - it was called lomustin). But I did do a lot of reading on the subject and there seems to be some really great progress with treatment using chemo for dogs. Stella had absolutely no reaction to the drug at all, no tummy upset, nothing!
Withing all the best for you and "our" girl.
Gary... I'm sorry to hear about Clovis' patho result
but please think positive!
My cancer was diagnosed as Grade 3 (worst) endometrial carcinoma almost 4 yrs. ago and I'm still alive with no recurrence or metastasis, even though I only had surgery alone ( I refused chemotherapy or radiation).
We are sending tons of good thoughts and prayers to you and Clovis.

No, but I googled it and it sounds promising!
