My puppy has a hypoplastic trachea..need advice!

Hi everyone.. I just purchased a bulldog puppy about 1 month ago. When we got the puppy he had a bad runny nose. After going to 4 different vets we finaly found out that he has pneumonia as well as a hypoplastic trachea (size 3 to 4) as well as an enlongated soft pallet. The vet advised us to return the puppy to the breeder. I really wonder if we should return him, its very hard on us because we have definatly grown attached to him! He has no signes of bad breathing because he will play with our australlian shepard for hours and hours. I would just like some advise and maybe some future concerns that we might run into. Thanks!!

Did you buy him from BHP..

as a rare or exotic blue-eyed bulldog pup? I ask because I see that a lot from puppy millers and brokers that advertise the blue-eyed pups as rare and/or exotic bulldog pups. In all honestly, if Beverly Hills Puppies hasn't returned your calls, most likely they are and you are not going to get any money back to cover some of the medical expenses you are going to have to fork out.

The trachea will most likely grow with him so as he gets bigger you will see the differance in his breathing. The Elongated soft palate will probaly require surgery that costs about $500-550.

How much did you pay for your pup?

Good luck with your pup and I wish him a long and healthy life!

With Ozzy

When Ozzy was 3 months old he got pneumonia and the emergency vet at Tufts said it looked like he had hypoplastic trachea. Fast forward to 9 months when he had his neuter surgery by a bulldog vet, when we picked him up I ask about the tube size and if she saw any palete issues. She said they have two tube sizes that they use for bully's and Ozzy had no problem with the larger one, also if there is a palete issue they have to move the palate to insert the tube--she said they did not have any issues with Ozzy.
As you are already attached--I would wait a few months and have it evaluated by the bulldog vet. Even if they have hypoplastic trachea they can live a normal life--you just have to watch them more and the palate can be trimmed

don't know about that, there are new import laws

that address the minimum age a pup can be shipped at.
My Vet will give a Rabies shot to a 16 week old pup along with the last of the puppy series shots. I don't let her do this with my dogs - too much vaccines at once. I wait until the pup is 6 months for the Rabies and give it separately.

the pup looks to be 10-12 weeks old. Now that you mentioned the blue eye it makes more sense about the pink nose and no eye pigment. Usually by 8 weeks a pup's nose will be all black or have just a small pink spot or 2 and the eye rims will be showing some 'mascara'. If he is out in the sun be careful to not let him get burned. Some human 'baby' sunblock will help - just don't get it in his eyes.

1 blue & 1 brown eye

Not common but also not rare.
Definitely not correct as per the Bulldog Standard. This is a pup that should be neutered and the parents should not be bred to each other again. Usually the blue eye will be OK as far as sight goes, but the genes that cause it have been linked with other things (deafness) that could be passed on to any offspring.
Sorry this isn't going well for you. Love the little guy and when you are ready for another Bulldog, please seek out a responsible breeder.

Re: I hate to say this but I would definitely return him

We are definatly going to keep him. Since we have him on the right antibiotics the pneumonia has cleared. He has been playing non stop with our australian shepard and it has been in the upper 80's today and has had no breathing problems. I will definatly be asking the breeder for some sort of refund though.

I hate to say this but I would definitely return him

I know of several puppies who have had this condition and all of whom have had to be PTS. When we first started in Bulldogs we tried to save one, not knowing any better and aside from costing us a small fortune it was extremely heart breaking to see what our puppy went through and after 8 weeks we lost our battle anyway.

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy, our thoughts are with you.

What Lori said....

He does okay, but has limitations, but he knows it. You can not take him out in the summer, he just can't take the heat. My house is kept very cool at 68 degrees here in NC for the summer months, winter is better, he tires more quickly than my other dog, but does have some bursts.

My first bulldog, Dudley, had a small trachea. He had these exact symptoms. He winded easily & couldn't take the heat. I had to be extra careful with him. I trained & showed him in obedience. He got his CD & CGC.

It's not the end of the world but he should be neutered & not used for breeding.

About the broker's description of the Vet care the pups receive

This isn't bragging about how well they treat their pups, it is the minimum care required by law for a broker or volume breeder. Such a shame that the public can be so fooled by a slick operation that thrives on profit and not love for the breed!

depending on the age of your pup, size 3 or 4 might not be bad

A friend just had an 8 week old Bulldog pup lightly sedated for ear stapling and the Vet used a size 4 on her. None of us were concerned about hers being too small.
As your pup grows so will the trachea, but if by age 8 or 10 months it isn't within normal range, then the hypoplactic diagnosis would apply.
Could be the pneumonia is just due to poor conditions the pup was raised in at the brokers?

im sorry you are going through this

having a puppy with pneumonia is very hard, you need to hit it very hard with abx. I believe Clavamox takes to long and is not very effective in treating pneumonia in bulldogs.

I had 1 puppy with pneumonia as a very young baby. We treated with Zithromax and prednisone for 2 weeks. She still had scarring on her lungs, and took 6 months to recover. Since she had trouble breathing her palate grew down the back of her throat. I will say as we xrayed her every few weeks, i was able to watch her trachea. When she was sick, it was Very very small, like a spegetti noodle, as she got better the irritation took down the swelling and her breathing was much better. When she was spayed at 6months old her trachea was a size 9.

I would contact this "breeder" and have them pay for the vet bills, i know you are attached to her. If you have a "guarantee" they are bettign you have fallen in love with the puppy, and the "guarantee" is you return and they replace the puppy.

Zeniquin will get rid of bulldog pneumonia...

My baby had aspirated pneumonia and my vet tried a host of different antibiotics, breathing treatments, etc. Zeniquin is not recommended for puppies under 6 months...the side effect that my vet was concerned about is that it can cause pain in the puppy's legs. Punkie had NO side effects from the Zeniquin and was remarkably better in just 3 days...completely cured within 10 days!!!

OhMyGosh...I couldn't agree more...the same thing happened to me

BROKERS ARE BAD!! I purchased my baby girl from epuppypro.com...what a huge and terrible mistake!! Punkie had an upper respiratory infection/pneumonia and a host of other problems when we got her. We had to take her to the vet before her schedule appointment because she was so sick. I have spent many times more than the purchase price of $2500 to keep her healthy. She is going for entropion surgery this week. Long story short...there are lawsuits pending against this "breeder". The Texas Attorney General has filed a deceptive trade practices lawsuit and there is at least one class-action suit against her, as well. BAD,BAD,BAD are those scumbags who broker animals!! Gina Price is a good example of this type of person...she is doing time behind bars for making her living by exploiting animals and being deceptive!! I love my Punkie more than anything and I know I "rescued" her...I wouldn't take a million dollars for her. If I ever purchase another bulldog (which I WILL)...I will be doing my "homework" before I buy. I will be asking LOTS of questions right here on BDW and I will pick my puppy up from WHERE I purchase her...riding on an airplane is NOT good...in my opinion!

GREAT advice

please, please do not buyfrom them again.  I have a male that has hyperplastic trachea.  He has had two throat urgeries.  The last time they intubated him was when he had his last throat surgery long with getting neutered.  They used a size 7 trach tube, which is good.  He does okay, but has limitations, but he knows it.  You can not take him out in the summer, he just can't take the heat.  My house is kept very cool at 68 degrees here in NC for the summer months, winter is better, he tires more quickly than my other dog, but does have some bursts.  I love him dearly-  he definitely has my heart!

and remain until they are brought to the lush green of South Florida. We maintain the highest standards of cleanliness, and health care in the industry. Our puppies are fed a top quality premium pet food. Our puppies are bred for health, temperament, and conformation (quality). No two dogs are thrown together to let the chips fall where they may. Our puppies are examined on a continual basis by our medical professionals. Our veterinarians check all of our puppies on a weekly basis. Our puppies are growing babies and are given their own play-time where they are allowed to go outside and exercise their muscles. Socialization is not even a question; they all love to play together! Our procedures have been developed through our years of experience in the caring for animals."

Aaron,
I am sorry but these people are not breeders, they are brokers. Do you know what age they are shipped to the United States? What age did you get him at? None of the dogs are even registered with the AKC. I know you are attached to him but if you are thinking about getting another one, please do not buy again from these people. You can go to the breeder listings listed on the BDW homepage and you can find a wonderful breeder near you.

Best of luck to you.

Re: My puppy has a hypoplastic trachea..need advice!

Would u really want another pup from this breeder, free or not?????????? all the additional heart ache and vet costs may not make it worth it.

Also, if your pup is breathing and acting fine, STOP worrying. Remember, if he is eating, drinking, peeing, pooping normally, chances are he is fine. Alot of vets just do not know bulldogs.

Re: is he on pred too?

the vet has not recommended that yet. We had the vet do a transtracheal wash, aerobic culture, mycroplasma culture. We are going to get the results for the exact strain on the bacteria tomarrow.

We had him on zeniquin for a few days, not seeing any improvement we took him to another vet for a different opinion. He recommended the antibiotic and said he wants him on it for 2 weeks. We have definatly seen an improvement.

Aaron, if the Suprax

does not clear the pneumonia...ask your vet to put your puppy on Zeniquin. I didn't think my puppy would make it because her pneumonia was so bad and none of the antibiotics were touching it...when my vet put Punkie on Zeniquin, I could tell a difference within less than 3 days. By the end of the antibiotic she was completly well and has been free of pneumonia since. It took several different antibiotics and 3 months before we got the Zeniquin...I think it saved her life.

By the way, you should file a complaint with the Attorney General of the state that the puppy broker is in!

Brokers are greed driven...Breeders are breed driven.

I think new laws were passed that prohibit a broker from selling a puppy before the age of 6 months. Supposedly, the puppy must be old enough to have its rabies shot before a broker can sell an imported puppy. True??
