Gertie Gertie Gertie!!! She's eating wood chips in the back yard like they're going out of style!!
Every time I catch her I make her spit it out, but the few seconds I step inside she is chewing on another one... Question is, the couple I don't catch her eating, are they harmfull ????
Oh, Patti!
What a hard time!
Yeah, especially since you JUST put them in!
Argh, how frustrating that must be.

I think the fence is definitely a good temporary solution. Someday, you'll be able to take it down. But I don't know. Grover's two and will attempt to eat any BUG he sees, even though he HATES the sensation of a buzzing bug in his mouth and freaks out for hours afterward.
Julia
Thx Wendy
Oh Ya I totally know the fences she was reffering too.... Hmmm Im going to go and try that... I just thought it would be alot of work since we have so much darn wood chips!!!!
Lisa, Im with Patti but...
I think she was talking aobut the little garden edging type fence. We had to put that up to keep Prissy out of a part of our yard too. Its white (or you can get it in black and green I think) and is about a foot tall off the ground. You just stick it down into the ground. Milo could step over it, but if he isnt interested, I dont see why he would. Henry doesnt step over ours. He couldn't care less...lol
When she is older she will be able to step over it but for now she wont and may outgrow wanting to eat them in the meantime. It really looks nice and isnt a "real" fence. Ofcourse, Walmart has it!
Thank you..
Ok - Im going to be outside with Gertie at all times... It's not that easy to fence our wood chips off since they are the boarder along our whole back yard - Milo doesnt like them... We just got them a few weeks before Gert got here, I'll check with Glen to see if we can remove them but then she will get muddddddy!
The chips are really mosit from the dampness over here, I doubt they're treated with chemicals since the bugs seem to thrive on them instead of die.
I'll just watch her out there until she get's a bit older.
Thank you.
Getie & Spencer
Gertie and Spencer should get together. Yours eats wood chips and mine eat bushes. He has actually managed to eat all the bushes by my house. There are only little twigs left standing outside the ground. It is pretty funny. I have had german shephard that use to eat wood before. The vet told me that it is normal. They are actually lacking greens from there diet was his response. Well I think that it is just dandy if he wants to eat trees, bushes woodchips whatever type of fiber that he wants.
Kathy
Can you fence it????
Lisa, can you put some of that gardening fence up to keep her out of it? That way, may-be she'd outgrow it when she's older. Otherwise, if she or Milo still do it, I'd get rid of it.
I don't have wood chips, but had a redwood fence in the back yard, with the little knot holes...20 years ago I had a champion, Panda, the black brindle one, that would chew and chew, making the holes bigger. She would get all stopped up and constipated. I'd try laxatives, finally had the vet give her a flushing. Well, that is how I lost her finally. I knew she was stopped up again, not pooping and not feeling good. However, it was at the same time my mom was admitted in the hospital with what turned out to be leukemia. I was unable to get her to the vets for a couple days because I was at the hospital. By then she had turned toxic, and we couldn't pull her thru, she died. It was an extremely hard time for me.
What color
are the wood chips. Our landscaper said the red colored mulch is treated with something that can cause cancer. Also, a lot of mulch is treated with chemicals, to repel ticks and other critters.
Wood
Our little Boston Terrier [we call her a red neck] She loves a little stick in her mouth all the time it looks like she is chewing on a toothpick all the time. When she isn't chewing it it just hangs out of her mouth. When our bully has puppies she runs and finds a little stick and stands in the middle of the puppies chews the stick then drops it to them and waits to see if any one picks it up then does it again until they get the hang of it. It's funny to watch her. They aren't to big on the mulch just sticks.
Be Careful!
Lisa, please be careful letting you little one eat wood chips purchased on the open market. Many manufactures treat wood chips with toxins to kill bugs, etc. may or may not make Gertie sick.
Don't mean to alarm but lately here on the TV there has been several cases where dogs have gotten sick from eating wood chips, mulch, etc.....
Don
Yeah, I'm with Shelly... we're getting rid of the mulch at our n
Grover's been rooting around and I just don't trust it. He's not a big stick eater, but I'm just going to get rid of all of it anyway.
Any chance you could do that? Or fence it off for a while til she grows up a little?
Julia and Grover
farcus was a HUGE fan of mulch as a puppy...
i tried to catch it all, but i'm sure i didn't. i suppose it has potential to be toxic if its treated wood. otherwise, i would think the main problem would be choking or hurting her if it comes out the other end. hopefully though, it would be softened somewhat. that probably doesn't help much. good news he grew out of much and is now strictly a stick man.
wood chips..
Jesse did this as a young pup also, I would replace the wood chips because they will eventually cause stomach upset and vomiting, did with Jesse anyway.
