I have a 6 week old pup that whines and yelps all night long while in her crate. I put a stuffed animal in the crate to keep her company but it did not help. I covered her crate with a blanket and that helped some. I thought about putting a water bottle with warm water in there or I have seen this heartbeat bear in the baby dept. it is supposed to sound like the mother's womb. I know that she is young and misses mommy and siblings--what can I do to make her feel better? It breaks my heart to hear her cry.
Whining
My pup was a whiner. WE use a clock radio in her room.We also use an old windup up clock and the ticketing helped.
perfect solution -- LOL
My husband has the perfect solution --- and he swore 19 years ago that he WOULD NEVER EVER DO THIS!!!!
He sleeps with both our bullies -- they both curl up and the end of the bed. Both of them were brought straight home and he couldn't stand the whining - so guess what he did? LOL -- and would NEVER do anything like that.
I also agree with the late night feeding thing - the later you feed them, the more apt they are to potty in the night. We feed around 6 pm (for the 3rd and final feeding of the day.) We also pick the water up at 8 pm. We go to bed between 10 and 11 pm. They eat and drink first thing after potty in the morning (6 am or so.) This has made it much easier to be trained. And the second one - who I felt hopeless about training because he lived in an indoor kennel for so long - is doing GREAT! Possitive praise - they love "cookies" (lamb and rice doggie biscuits) - also does WONDERS!!!
Good Luck. And I TOTALLY understand putting them in bed with you isn't for everyone, but if you and your husband don't mind having the extra bed space taken up - the bullies love it too! LOL
Crate training
Hi to you both,
Six weeks old is VERY young for a puppy to be taken away from his/her siblings & mother. The average time is 10 weeks. Most pups will cry (very loudly) for the first few nights away from anything familiar. It will certainly get better in time but for now your pup will need to go out every few hours to go potty. Don't be surprised is he/she soils in the crate. He/she has no control right now. I have a 16 week old puppy named Opal. She sleeps through the night from about 10:30 to between 6 & 7 am. This is my schedule:
She whines in the morning & I immediately (in my PJ's) take her outside & she pees & poops. I give her a cup of dry food mixed with a tablespoon of yogurt (she loves it) and she drinks all the water she wants. She goes out again about an hour after eating. Then she gets crated & I leave for work at 8:10am. I get home at 1:15pm & she immediately goes out again. She gets another cup of food & yogurt & water. She runs around for about 30 minutes & then back in the crate again. I get home at 5:30 & again she goes out right away. She usually eats her last meal & gets her last water around 6:30 then the bowls come up. She gets taken out 2 or 3 times after that, the last time being around 10:30. By that time her bladder is pretty empty & she sleeps through the night.
I think the late night feeding is what's making your pup wake up at 2:00am to go out.
This system works very well for me & the housebreaking is going pretty good.
The 6 week old pup will take quite some time to get housebroken. Pups really can't "hold it" until they are around 4 months old. Be patient. It will be a long haul. It's very important that you don't take your pup to any public places such as parks & PetCo until he/she has had several series of shots. Little pups can pick up some nasty diseases from those places.
Good luck to you both.
Whining in Crate
I think that whining, crying, peeing etc..comes along with puppy hood (LOL). I would not recommend covering the crate with a blanket for fear that air circulation may be affected. My puppy still does not sleep through the night (almost 17 weeks), however she does not cry all night either. I make sure that she is fed late at night, around 11:00 pm and that she has a big drink of water, I check that all her beding is dry, fluffy and comfortable. She then sleeps until about 2:00 am, then she cry's we get up to go outside, she drinks and eats a little again and goes back to bed until about 6:00 am. You may want to try feeding her late at night, making sure she has had a drink prior to going to bed (unless she has water in her crate). I have heard that hot water bottles are helpfull, also some people put a clock beside the crate....I guess the "tick, tick" is comforting. Good Luck and please keep us posted.
