What do you use for itchy deep tail pocket?

Hooch's tail pocket is driving us nuts. Whenever we go to clean it (usually use a baby wipe or just qtips and then either neopredef or Gold Bond baby powder) he goes BERSERK with itching. TOday after his cleaning (before the powder) it was like he was being tortured from the itch, running around, throwing himself on the floor, rolling on his back. This went on so long I was afraid he would hurt himself! It doesn't bother him until we touch it, but it has to get cleaned. he has a deep pocket that was infected when he came to us. Right now it's not smelling too pretty either so we want to clean more often, but how can we if it seems we are just aggravating him?

Jessica just posted dogs were having adverse reactions to the Co

they have been reported to cause burning. I wouldn't use baby wipes. Could he be having an allergic reaction to the kind of shampoo you are using??''

When Junior (tight tail) or Roxy (screw tail) have itchy rears, I put A & D Ointment on them and it seems to soothe the itch or burn or whatever the problem is.

Are you sure it's not his anal sacks?

What kind of baby wipes are you using?

He may be allergic to something in the baby wipes. If I use baby wipes on Maizy's tail pocket, I use fragrance free wipes. Usually, I just wipe the tail pocket with a dry kleenex to keep from adding any extra moisture. I deep clean it when I give her a bath and of course I dry it well. Sometimes I will use diaper rash creme if I think it's a little irritated.

Heres what we do

Diaper wipes wrapped over a finger worked in and clean out the pocket, until it comes out clean. Then using a hair dye bottle, with the end snipped open to about 1/8 inch, filled with Gold Bond medicated powder. A squirt or two, on either side usually keeps our guys clean and dry.

Perserverance isn't a long race.
It's a series of short races,
ran one after the other.

do you have pics of stanley's tail before his amp?

would really like to see

Stanley had 4 tail deep tail pockets, we had his tail amputated,

Michele, we used to use Desitin on Oreo when her...

pocket was icky. We used Malaseb spray on a cotton ball and then dried and put the Desitin on. The only thing I would disagree with is doing it several times a day, it can get irritated if you mess with it too much. Also, if you put him in the bathtub or shower, you can clean it out good with malaseb shampoo and then rinse with a plastic bottle like a picnic ketchup bottle filled with clean water.

Yikes, I didn't know they could do that. Hope we

never get to that point.

Desitin? Found this on another board

* baby wipes (unscented with aloe work best)
* diaper rash cream (such as Desitin)
* medicated powder (such as Gold Bond)

What to do:
Use baby wipes to clean under the tail at least a couple of times per day. Your Bullie will most likely be licking the air while you this (normal but funny to see).

After that use unscented diaper rash creme and apply that to the raw areas, again getting under the tail as necessary. This will help to keep moisture out of the area. You may need to do this for a couple of days depending on how red/raw the area still is.

Once you have the redness and irritation under control, continue with the baby wipes but switch to the medicated powder instead of diaper rash creme to help keep the area dry. This also helps with the itching your Bullie is probably dealing with. You can just apply the powder from the container or if you'd like, you may use a small paintbrush to help you get it where it needs to be.

Within about 4-5 days your Bulldog should be back to normal (maybe sooner). You should consider making the medicated powder a weekly treatment or even more often to prevent problems in the future.

Oh, why didn't I think of that? I have them.

I use Malaseb towelettes to clean tail pockets and keep the itch

I used to do the same thing you are doing and tried these medicated towelettes and found them to be so much better.

You think dogs will not be in Heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us.

I ended up having the vet

surgically remove it/close it over. This was years ago with one of my males. It got so painfull, he'd be crying... The vet did a great small incision and made a 'tail flap'. He always looked like he had a 'pseudo' tail...(cosmetic tail) and no probs. after that.

Actually, Michele,

It was the best thing ever! and he was soooooooooooo relieved...I don't remember it as being that big of a deal, however, HE HAD NO TAIL so, basically, the vet just closed over the tail pocket and used the existing skin to create the new tail...you could not even tell anything had been done.
