Hello! I ave a 1 year old Bulldog and I've been feeding him Natural Balance. Which has been pretty good because it is hypo-allergenic and has natural ingredients. The only problem is, he has A LOT of gas. I heard Royal Canine helps out with the gas situation, but I am not sure what brand I should try. Please give me any feedbac or suggestions in food. Thank you!
Same for Boo, after switching her to Wellness, almost never have
before Wellness, it was pretty bad. And she and Clovis also had bad gas until I put them on Wellness.

Extremely firm poop, subject to the following caveat . . .
i.e., it may depend on which of the many (too many, IMO) Wellness formulas you select. I can't recall the exact name of the formula, but the first Wellness formula I fed to my dogs did in fact cause very soft poop. Not sure, but I think it was the regular Super 5 Mix that is called something like "Adult Health" formula.

I pointed out that problem to one of the store's employees, who also happens to be the trainer who trained Boo and Clovis back when she worked at Petsmart (she lost her job there due to Hurricane Katrina). She said her show dogs encountered the same runny poop problem on that formula. She said she then switched them to the Super 5 Mix "Large Breed" formula and their poop firmed up right away. So that is what I put my dogs on and they too had firm poop within a day or too.
So, it's sort of a trial and error process, you have to find the formula that works for your dog. And, btw, I also buy the canned Wellness to put on top of the dry food. I just love the ingredients for the canned Wellness, which comes in about 7 different flavors.
If you do start your bulldog on Wellness, be sure to go to their home page and sign up for their coupons, which they will email to you.

No, one of my dogs, Boo, had a terrible time with grain free kib
I started with Evo Innova, which is totally grain free. Boo almost immediately started having seizures and also started peeing in her bed overnight. The latter was extremely unusualy for Boo. From the day I brought her home as a puppy, she was amazingly well paper trained and yard trained. Even her aim was exquisite, almost always exactly in the middle of the paper. Thus, if I had to work very late into the night, I had no worries about Boo having to squirm for 10 to 15 hours while I was away. If she had to go potty, she would just go over to the paper and hit it every time (Clovis is well trained too but aim isn't always so good). So it was quite a shocker when Boo started peeing in her bed. She had never done that even once when she was a 7 week old puppy. And as soon as I took her off the Evo Innova, both problems went away.

So I immediately took Boo off the Evo, which also caused bad diarrhea in her and all of my dogs. I later tried Taste of the Wild, both the Prairie and Pacific Stream formulas. Same result, i.e., Boo started having seizures and peeing in her bed overnight. I think I tried another grain free food, same results.
I later spoke with two separate vets about Boo's reactions to grain free kibble. They both were opposed to feeding grain free. They noted that most grain free formulas have a high protein percentage, i.e., above 40%, and they both said that puts a strain on the kidneys of domesticated dogs.
Of course, a lot of people on this board do feed grain free kibble and their dogs do not have a problem with it, at least not yet. So, what works or doesn't work for one dog may have no relevance to another dog.
For what it's worth, I found finding the right dog food to be incredibly frustrating, especially for someone with more than one dog. I did find, tho, that every one of the dog foods that I tried that caused diarrhea in one dog caused it in all of my dogs, even tho I introduced the new food slowly.
Good luck.

I love Wellness
Bobo is on Wellness grain free and I hardly ever have to wipe his butt now! LOL Not very much gas either.
Good suggestion
And all the pups I know LOVE yogourt!
If NB other than the gas is good why switch and maybe have furth
tablespoon of live culture YOGURT to his food daily. It has to be live culture plain no flavor. This usually always cuts the gas out or most of it.
Thanks for all the great info about Wellness!!
My tuffy has really soft poop and it's good to hear that the Large breed formula worked for your dog.... Now I have to decide between this one and Fromm...
Do you use the grain free?
It's in a brown bag? I accidentally bought the lamb/Core 5 and wow, the gas came back with a vengence. Najee and Stanley are eating that now, they don't have any gas problems, thank heavens.
Re: My bulldogs used to have a lot of gas
thank you for your advice.
My bulldogs used to have a lot of gas
but then I took them off dog foods that have wheat, corn, and or soy as ingredients. I also stick to dry foods that have meat or protein ingredients as the first two ingredients, preferably the first three. My recommendation is to stay away from any dog food that has a non meat or protein as the first ingredient . . . unless your dog has serious allergy problems and needs to eat a vegetarian diet.

I now feed my dogs Wellness Super 5 Mix - Large Breed formula. They rarely get gas now. Only downside is that it's very expensive, but that is for four dogs. For just one dog, the price would not be too bad.
Keep in mind, tho, that what works for someone else's dog may not work for yours.

Question about Wellness Super 5 Mix - Large Breed formula
I'm looking to transition my dog from C.Natural puppy formula and Wellness was one of the foods I was looking at. My pup has very loose stools on C. Natural. Do your dogs have firm poop with Wellness...?
