West Nile

I see we just had our first case of a dog dying from West Nile. I sure hope that isn't the start of something.

I saw that on the news too-but it sounds like only if you bought

Prairie Dog or some sort of Rat are you in danger of getting it.

It is related to small pox but people do not die from it

Hope not and here we have monkey pox....

Very close to me here it said on TV--monkey pox??
I never heard of it but:(

We had our equines vaccinated for WNV ...

there were a few equine fatalities in Montana last year from WNV, but the vets say it's not an issue with dogs.

Something has apparently changed ....

2 here last year

Last summer, 2 dogs died here in Illinois from West Nile though neither were near where we live. I think they were both older dogs.

Oh, Oh! I have concerns now. n/m

Local news

It was on the local news station this am in tx. It was a dashound that died. I live outside of Ft Hood. TV station was a Waco station.

Giant Gambian Rat

I think you mean the Giant Gambian Rat. Exotic pet from (you guesses it), Gambia. Rat carries Monkey Pox, a disease less like Small Pox (which it resembles) and more like chicken pox. Imported Ganbian Rat infected some Prairie Dogs at a pet store. Prairie Dogs were sold and the new owners caught the pox. Disease never seen in this hemasphire before. The outbreak has been pretty much contained.

West Nile is a whole other thing. It's a bird disease that can spread to people (and dogs????) through mosquitos.

Where did you see this?

I am curious because my vet said West Nile is only a problem for birds, horses and people. Not dogs. That is why I opted not to go with k9 Advantix. I am confused.
