Wellness

I just got my 4 months old puppy last Sunday. He was on Puppy Science Diet but I gradually swith him to wellness(puppy) by cutting 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 . Now he is on wellness only with a scoop of rice cereal. My problem is since I start adding wellness to his food, his stool immedieatly gets softer, now he is fully on wellness, his stool is soooo soft. When he goes poop, it seems like it's never ending, he would walk with a little drop here and there. Does anyone have same kind of problem? Any suggestion? Any tricks?(that you always have) Do I need to switch him back to Science Diet ? Forgot to mention, I did try the pumpkin trick already but it doesn't work. Thank you a million in advance.

Wellness..

I have heard this about Wellness. I have never used it because of that reason.

Wellness stools will always be soft (long)

Sheldon was on Wellness for about 1 year. We had problems with soft stools and diarrhea, while on the Lamb and the Fish & Potato formula (no problems with the Puppy). At times, we also had the same problem that someone else described, normal stools and then very runny at the end. It seemed to be a recurrent cycle where the stools would be more firm for a few months and then get soft and runny. I could never easily/completely pooper scoop the stools (even when they were more firm). I have done a lot of research on Wellness. This is what I have learned.

First, my vet says that you should change foods over a 2 week period and that it can take up to 2 whole months to completely adjust to a new food. Second, if your bully is on Wellness, the stools should be formed, but will always be soft. It even says so on the package. I also verified this with the Old Mother Hubbard Company. Wellness is a very "rich" food, some dogs cannot tolerate it, while others do very well.

I discussed this in depth with my vet, who thought that Sheldon might have a sensitive stomach and/or food allergies and wanted to put him on an ID food. I was convincecd that the problem was Wellness, and nothing else. I finally switched him to Solid Gold and saw dramatic improvement within the first week. His stools have been consistent and I can finally pooper scoop them up.

I would give your bully at least 2 months to adjust. If you are still having problems after 2 months, I would switch food. Also, if your bully has diarrhea make sure he stays hydrated. Good Luck.

Howie's been on Wellness

Fish and Sweet Potato for around six months now and his stools are still loose. They are very firm at first, but by the end they are VERY loose. I have tried the pumpkin and not only did it not work, he seemed to dislike it also. He has done well on the food with the exception of his stools. They are nearly impossible to pick up until the next day. Good luck. If you find a solution, please share. Thanks.

Wellness does take a while...

It took my guy almost a full month to get used to the food. Be careful not to over feed. That will contribute to the loose and excessive droppings. I have switched other foods before but Wellness did take the longest to get used to. Now he is perfect!

When we changed over

It took a while for Flora's poop to get less soft. My previous buly was on Science diet for years. It had peanut shells at that time ground up for fiber and produced lots of poop, though dry. Flora really produces very little poop overall for the amount of food she eats compared to Abby. I think that the extra fatty acids in Wellness that help the coat and things also loosen the stool. No help for it, but some explanations. Good luck.

keep it the same

don't add the SD back. just stick with the wellness. like vicky said, add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin to each meal. that should help things along for the next couple of weeks

i agree

you dont have to feed as much like you would other brands, the quality is much better.

I feel bad i feed 1 1/2 c per day, and most other dogs eat 3c per day. My dogs are not thin and/or starving. Most times they do not finish thier food.

Thank you

Oh..ooooo....It was my mistake, I thought that 1 week is "gradually" enough....sorry my love.
Now what? Should I add some more Science Diet back into his food or just let it be and his body will get use to it? I tried pumpkin before but it didn't work.
I'd like to thank you all for a truly love and support you give to the bully lovers. It's wonderful.

add some canned pumpkin

sounds like you changed him a little fast. Changing should be more like over a month vs week. Put about 1tbls of pumpkin in his food for about 1 month as he is getting use to his food. It should regulate his system.

Post pix of you new boy.

give him some time to get use to the new food - in the meantime

BABY WIPES! hahaha!

Re: Wellness

you changed him over in 1 week? if so that is why is poop is soft. It could take up to a month for the new food to kik in. Good luck
