here in the Denver area. We were really excited and since Winnie loves other dogs, we thought it would be really fun for her (and us). Well, we were the first ones there and the place was a little warehouse were they have doggie day care as well as boarding facilities. All of the boarding dogs were barking and WInnie was a bit disturbed because she thought she was going to be left there. It was all concrete and 95% outside (it was cold) and all of the other Bulldogs were much bigger than Winnie.70 and 80 lbs. Even the females were at least 45. She is a petit 30. She seemed ok and was checking out the other Bullys and we were enjoying talking to other Bulldog owners. Then the owners of the facility (not bulldog owners) brought out a bunch of KONG toys and the Bulldogs went crazy....mostly mine! She is a little thing, so sweet, gentle with children and submissive to other dogs EXCEPT when there is a toy! She got a hold of one of them and proceeded to growl at any bulldog that tried to get it from her. The males left her alone but one female did what I have been dreaded and attacked Winnie for it. I did what I was not suppose to do and got in the middle to pull WInnie out of there. SHe got bit in the lip and we left.
I am bummed...I dont know what to do about her behavior and I was bummed that the owner of the place didnt know better than to bring out a bunch of toys. When we left there was still a bunch of growling and fighting over toys, the only difference was they were all about the same size.
DOes anyone else have issues with their bullys getting aggressive with toys and what did you do? WInnie wont bite us because she doesnt dare release the toy, but that didnt stop the other dog from attacking her.
I feel like I cant take her to a doggie day care, I am worried about when we have children and WInnie takes their toys. My fiance says this is a bulldog thing. His Bully growing up was very similar. We have tried training classes and winnie will drop it for a treat but if there are other dogs around she is less likely to do it in a timely manner.
Second thing is what do i do for her lip wound. It seems to heal and then she busts it open. I have tried putting a little petroleum jelly on it, but she likes to lick it off.
I think I just needed to vent.
Thanks for listening.

Why in the heck would the owner have done that?
That is just asking for trouble. A group of dogs, some don't know eachother, excited already... then to bring out a bunch of toys to hype them up? that is asking for trouble.
Agreed. Winnie did nothing wrong.

Thank you all so much, I feel much better after reading all your
I am so thankful for my BDW family

You cant even compare this to having kids in the future.
You bring home a baby that she sees is super-important and delicate- and loved- by the way yall interact with the baby, and she will understand.

Also, I will always be the one who tells you carrying around a baby doll to "pretend" and guage her reaction to it is just stupid, so dont let anyone try to talk you into that. She is a dog, not a simpleton. She can tell a live creature from a toy just like you can. You bring that baby into your house and she sees how you react to it, and she will start to understand. I wouldnt leave her alone with the baby. I wouldnt let the baby/toddler/child pull on her or be mean to her. That is just asking for trouble, but a tthe same time you have to give her some credit. She is a female, and she takes her cues from you. She would be just fine with you having children.
-Oh and I agree with everyone else. She behaved very normally for a dog. I wouldnt worry about it. Kiss her booboo for me. Poor baby!
Clovis is very possessive about toys
but she doesn't fight over them. If I give both her and Boo the same toy, Clovis will take hers and bring it to the Perla she uses as a toy box, then go back and get Boo's and also bring that one back to the Perla. Fortunately, Boo just lets her do it.

So sorry to hear Winnie got bit. The owner of the place should have known better than to throw toys out like that. That was almost as reckless as it would have been if she threw a bunch of food in the middle of all the dogs.

Amen!
The owner made a major mistake. I hope nobully got hurt too badly. Keep working on the drop it command. You shouldn't have to have a treat to get her to give up something she has in her mouth. What if she picks up something dangerous and you don't have a treat handy? That's just a safety issue. Otherwise, I thinks Winnie acted in a very normal way.

Just keep the wound clean and try not to stress too much.
Kisses to Winnie baby!

Winnie didn't do anything wrong
first, the owner should know better then to put toys out, that is just asking for trouble.
Winnie was being polite and warned the other dogs. There's nothing wrong with that, she communicated properly, it's the female that attacked her that acted inappropriately.
I would wash her wound out well and leave it alone.

We have the same problem with Dozer...
We took him to the dog park one day and a friend of my husbands brought his bullie and Dozer and this male instantly didnt get along. Dozer had a frisbee and the other dog attempted to take it and Dozer just snapped, we really thought he was going to hurt this other dog. He had never exhibited this behavior with us or other dogs before. So now we're simply extra careful about toys and we keep working on the drop command. He will drop without a treat if it's just us around but if there's multiple people or other dogs it's like all his training goes out the window,lol.. Keep working on it, you can do it..
