Last Spring, Dolly developed a bit of seasonal flank alopecia & somebody here suggested using Melatonin to prevent it. So I read about it on the internet & starting last Fall I've been giving Dolly one tablet a day. The thing I'm noticing for about the last month or so is that when I sweep my kitchen floor there's hardly any Bulldog hair! I love that! Also used to be that when Dolly shook herself we could see hair flying everywhere & that's not happening now either. I'm thinking this is all due to the use of Melatonin. Anybody else use Melatonin & notice the same????

Melatonin
My girl Winnie has had SFA for the last 3 years. I did the Melatonin this year starting in Sept. Her hair has completely filled in!! It did seem to make her a little sleepy if I gave her a dose in the a.m. so we only gave it to her in the eve. problem solved. I have stopped giving it to her for the summer but will resume in Sept again. Hope this helps.

BTW I did have her thyroid tested just in case.
I've read about it...
And did some more rereading this AM & Melatonin doesn't seem to have any real negative side effects for dogs. Maybe I'll stop it over the summer but start in again in the Fall.

I can't exactly remember when...
Dolly started getting the SFA last year. I think it was around now. So far her hair looks great & I really like that we don't have so much of it all over the house!

Iz Winter Over?
I was just hoping...
It would work for the SFA but I like that we don't have so much hair all over the house too! Wonder if it would thicken up MY hair! LOL

Iz Winter Over?
I always thought it was for short term use...glad we can keep us
it for SFA.
Morning Judy
that is interesting, rocky has sfa, and he sheds like crazy, I have to dry his bedding everyday and vac where he sleeps. When he shakes it flies everywhere too, thanks for the tip. glad it is working for Dolly

I use it on Dozer..
And it worked for his SFA too, i give 2 pills a day roughly 6mg and it has really helped. My husband and i take it too when we have insomnia because it helps humans fall asleep.

Re: Using Melatonin???
Several of my dogs get Melatonin to prevent SFA. I give 2-3mg pills each evening with their meals from September thru April and the difference it makes is amazing!
One or 2 of the girls get a thin coat on their sides without the Melatonin, but another one gets completely bald on her sides. The worst part is that when Spring comes and the dogs want to be outside a lot, she has no fur on her sides and then gets sunburned.
