Just had to post, since I posted when my last bitch who I thought was pregnant wasn't.
Angie is pregnant...6 fetuses showed...vet said could be more...just hope she doesn't reabsorb...
I am giving her Canidae, which is her regular food, 400 mg folic acid, 1 and half Pet Tabs Plus...should I add another 250 mg of Vitamin C and when, if at all, should I add Vitamin D???
Should I switch to Canidae Platinum b/c it is for senior dogs and may have less naturally occurring salt???
Any opinions would be welcome!
Thanks,
Lorraine

CONGRATULATIONS
If you switch to anything do not switch to anything made for seniors as it has less nutrients that are needed for growth. If anything switch to puppy food. As for the salt there is nothing to say what causes the walrus pups even though some vets have done studies. I have known of these being in a litter that the dam was fed a salt free diet and none in litters that the dam was not fed salt free. It is still a mystery. Unless the vet says something different I would feed her what ever she likes in the way of dog food, plus the vitamins. After she has the pups my vet says to give 2 Tums at each nursing to the dam for the calcium content so she does not get eclampsia, especially with large litters.
Thanks to all for feedback, nm

Less Salt, Protein and Fat?
Lorraine,
If switching to Platinum will result in less protein and fat, you might want to think twice since the dam-to-be could use that extra protein and fat to develop her pups. Also, the idea that the Senior variety has any less salt than the regular kind can only be answered by the manufacturer - you may want to send them an email or verify this on their website if possible. Anyway, the usual advice you will hear is to switch momma to a higher protein and fat content type of food (usually puppy) about a month into the pregnancy.
