For those who do vaccinate against Lepto

Now for me personally i have specifically in my contract and paperwork that went out with my puppies that they were NOT to be vaccinated with Lepto. Lepto is not of concern here where I am in California nor does my vet feel is of concern in many areas. Sadly one of my puppy buyers almost killed thier puppy because they failed to READ or LISTEN to any of my advice. I sent out a 30 page book on how to care for your new Bulldog puppy that i spent the last 2 years writting. It was based on my own experiences, research i gathered online, articles, pictures, ect. But i also make it very clear that one must always consult with thier vet when making medical decions about thier dog and vaccinations etc.

Now mind you i had been giving the vaccinations for my puppy and even left this family with the next one to do themselves or have me come back down and do it for them. Of coarse somehow they threw one away! Go figure. So Lepto was given to this puppy at her vet appointment and she had a severe reaction. They got lucky and she pulled through. But often many dogs because the reaction causes the airway to close off and they die. If they are not tubed and oxygenated quickly they go fast.

Now mind you..i dont care for thier vet. But i had to respect that they rushed her in immediatly (they do for every little thing)

So for those who do vaccinate for Lepto? Have any of you checked when the last time Lepto was contracted by a dog in your area?

We dont and my vet has it seperate vs a combo

he said we dont need to give the shot.

We dont at all. Its in my contract too, do not give LEPTO. The rule was do not give to dogs under 10lbs due to high reactions, it's a nono for chihuahuas. IMO its a no no for all dogs.

that's the way I see it

Within the past year the Vet Clinic I use has seen several cases of Distemper! That is something that is a core vaccination and should be unheard of, especially in an area with discretionary income. The Clinic is located in a very up-scale area and has clients with $$$. Even though I'm poor and live an hour away, the Vets and staff are really Bulldog knowledgeable, so I use them.

Are Lepto vaccines the reason infection rate is so low?

I wonder if no one vaccinated, would there be even more dogs deaths related to Lepto than to vaccines?

Lepto

My dogs do get the Lepto vaccine. It scares me, but since we live in a heavily wooded area with many wild critters, farms with cattle, hogs, chickens and horses and the ground is often damp or flooded, I feel it a necessary evil to give it. Lepto is also able to be passed to humans, so if I had children, for me, that would tip the scale in favor of giving it. Lepto can be a nasty, nasty disease.
However, I have my Vet give the Lepto as a single vaccine (it requires 2 shots, 3-4 weeks apart) not in a combo, and definitely not at the same time any other vaccine is given. I seem to remember my Vet said the newer vaccines are effective against 4 strains and would hopefully lessen the chance of the others.
In over 35 years of dog ownership, I have had 1 dog have a reaction to the Lepto vaccination. She got a hard lump about the size of a walnut at the injection site that took about a month to go away. But each dog is different, so, each dog owner should weigh the risks to their individual dog against the benefits before proceeding.

Actually both.....

my nephew lost is Mini Pin last year to it and he lives in the "country". However, here in my area, we have tons of racoons and possum that are causing the problem. My vet had indicated that they recently lost a dog here to Lepto.

To give you an idea.....last year, every day for three days, there was a racoon that got hit by a car and killed right next to my house. And they were not the racoons you see on TV. These racoons were, on average, 30-40 lbs and were as big as Floyd was!

Were the dogs who contracted it "outdoorsy" types or did

they live in a more rural area?

thank you for posting

so you do know of people loosing thier pets to it. Nice to know and thanks for sharing.

I dislike vaccinations very much....

since Friday has an immune problem and we almost killed her with one.

When I saw a holistic vet years ago, he taught me about titers. Now I always do them and make my decision based upon what is going on. However Friday will NEVER get another vaccination for as long as she lives. And my vet already has a document to that nature in her file so explain why she does not get rabies which is required by law.

Sadly, Lepto is on the rise here on Long Island and Upstate NY where I have had relatives lose their pets to it.

Gee, I don't think so

No, it's because of the huge deer population around the cottage. Lots of potential for exposure to ticks from the deer, and therefore the lyme.

I discussed Lepto with my Vet many years ago

From what I remember, there's many different strains of Lepto and the vaccine does not protect the dog from all of them. So, your dog could still get Lepto even with the vaccine. My Vet does not recommend the Lepto vaccine and I have never given it to my dogs.

I took that to mean the there are a lot of deer ticks

around the cottage.

I think she means they do lyme because

the cottage is in the woods where the ticks are (bushy heavily wooded areas) versus living in the city where you wouldn't really need it. I have to do lyme on Onslow as well it's all over RI.

We don't vaccinate for Lepto here either...

no cases that I know of in Arizona. However, I do have a friend on the east coast whose bulldog died from Lepto itself, not the vaccine. I guess it depends on where you live. If I remember correctly, don't they contract Lepto from being outdoors and drinking standing water?

Kathy, Ollie and Chester

can you explain what you mean ?

How does one expose themselves to Lymes disease by living in a cottage?
Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria? Are you saying your cottages are infected with this bacteria?

Unfortunately, there are frequent cases around Montreal

So I feel I have a responsibility to do it. We always hang out 1/2h our so after our vaccines to make sure everything is OK. The vet comes out and checks on us between patients. Not just for the Lepto but for any vaccines she gets (inclue bordatella, lyme because of our cottage, and rabies).
