Ok, I have been emailing Helen back and forth , and since she isnt on now I wanted to post a msg and ask any of you if you have had any problems with your bullys tail, underneath, We took Molly to the vet for a consult on her spaying last week and the vet said she has a yeasty smell under her tail, which we noticed but didnt know what the source was... anyway, we have been just cleaning it with a moist paper towell then putting desitin on it, and it seems less red now, but she is still very sensitive down there, and doesnt like us even cleaning it, she sits on my hand whenever I clean it, I just wanted to make sure I'm doin this correctly.. I also have goldbond powder but havent used it yet, is there anything additional I should be doing, have any of you experienced this ?
Lemon juice
Frannie,
I use an oral dropper. They are plastic, look like a hypodermic needle but have a short-wide opening. Just draw the juice in and squirt into the side of her mouth. I keep them around to use with liquid antihistimine in case of a bee sting.
Good luck
Lynn K
I've been told
that the problem usually occurs in dogs with deep tail pockets. Sheldon's barely has a tail pocket at all and has never had problems with it. The only time he gets cleaned under is tail is when he has a bath, about every 2 weeks.
We've only used it three times that I can remember!
Definitely use it sparingly. You can tell when there's just too much phlegm in there vs. ordinary panting.

Sometimes, and I know people say it doesn't actually help a WHOLE lot, I put some lemon juice in Grover's waterbowl. Or in his spray bottle of water (what we use when "on the move.")
But the more concentrated, the better it works to break up the phlegm. Good to have around... we take it with us on the boat ALL the time.
Julia
it's used to clear flem, but how often do y'all use it? I've rea
that it should only be used when they're having trouble breathing... but it sounds like you guys are using it more regularly?!? Sometimes Leeloo gets a little flemy after she rough-plays for a while, should I be using it then???

Good Idea! She was clearing her throat alot the other nite, hasn
and that nite when I squirt it into her mouth she was PISSED HAHAAHAH and it was really hard to do it, anyway I dont use it often only when I notice shes got flem, like last nite we where at the obedience class and she hacked up mucas , I think because they where having us pull on the collar and stuff to do demonstrations and she got all wound up and thats what happened, hasnt done it since..
no I haven't ..thanks
I know powder is great for stopping moisture..
so I'll give it a go..thanks agin...ce
Poke your finger in the side of her cheek...
That usually gets Grover's mouth open.
And you just have to hold on for dear life while you squirt. I haven't heard of ONE bulldog that likes lemon juice.
Hee hee.
Use it only when absolutely necessary so that she's not suspicious every time you go to the fridge.
Julia
lemon juice
Please tell me what you use lemon juice for???I have two bulldogs and have never heard of this...Thanks for the info.....
Another ? - How the heck do you squirt lemon juice into your bul
Molly is a ROYAL PAIN when it comes to this, we try and hold her down and all and she will NOT open her mouth ... LOL
Heres my situation, tell me what you think..
Mollys tail is a screw, and its larger then most I have seen, covers her butt hole to .. LOL nice way of putting it, its a cork screw to the point where its VERY hard to get your fingers in there to clean, because she tightens it so you cannot do anything to her .. Anyway, shes got this yeasty smell coming from her , I do get the feeling its still irritated even though its not as red, because when we finish cleaning it her ears go back and she kind of squirms... I have been cleaning it with a moist paper towell instead of baby wipe, because the last time we used a wipe she started yapping becasue it burned... then we dry it and put desitin under there, do you know how hard it is to put desitin under a spot thats so TINY! HAHA So thats my routine.
How many of you have gotten a stanky scent coming from the rear? How do you get rid of it , now I'm only seemign to smell the desitin ... haha
Cleaning under the tail
I clean with a baby wipe, then wipe dry and follow with ear powder. The ear powder is wonderful because it dries up the yeasty bacteria and smells much nicer.
Ce - I agree about the burn but...
... have you tried the Gold Bond Baby version? It doesn't burn.
At least ME and I have a low pain threshold.

Grover seems ok with it. I don't know... just food for thought.
Julia
Right now, she's probably ok... but -
As they get bigger, their tails sometimes get tighter. Grover's did.

Just keep an eye on it. Clean it regularly. We peek in and can see when Grover's is clean and normal and when it's dirty and flaming red.
The powder is always a good thing though, b/c it keeps it nice and dry.
So it's really on a case-by-case basis.
Julia
be sure and dry it before you put on teh desitin...
clean..and I sometimes find cotton balls get under MoJo's tight bun the best...
then dry..important to dry...again dry cotton balls is what we use or those little soft poufy cotton makeup remover pads...just the pads nothing in them...
and then the desitin...I don't use gold bond ..because someone posted it burned..so I had a small cut I washed, dried and put on gold bond..and a few seconds later ..yup it burned alright...
Miss Molly We love ya...itchy bum and all...lol...ce
Do you recommend doing this always or only
if the tail seems to need it? Leeloo's tail is very clean and I wipe it down with baby wipes (but nothing else)
Love those bully bums!

Yep! =)
We clean Grover's very thoroughly but gently with a baby wipe, dry it with a dry paper towel, and then squirt in Gold Bond powder from a ketchup bottle. It's a GREAT system.

And we all know Grover LOVES to sit on things, so yes, he enjoys this routine, too.
It's very normal - just stay on top of it.
