I had one done by my regular vet at the time, (he isn't anymore), he ruined the dogs eyes, he over corrected them and for his entire life the dog looked alcoholic. Red droopy eye. The four others had them done by a specialist (opthalmic, eye vet), and they all look wonderful and no more problems. Recovery was easy, just putting ointment in daily, never had any problems with any of them. The amputation of the tail I never had any experience, but right now my Spike is having anal gland problems and they are talking about removing them.

Mabel had a cute as a button tail, but as she grew/matured her tail became more and more tight. I spent 3yrs cleaning and maintaining it, but she would still be very aggravated by it, sit and spin and with the humidity in Florida it was just really affecting her personality daily. Fortunately, I go to a wonderful Bulldog vet here in Lakeland whom I trust very much and she recommended the amputation.
Well, Mabel is a different dog...not distracted, not constantly trying to get to the eternal itch. Post-op was very low maintenance and she healed quickly and without any issues.
Now, it actually looks like she never had a tail lol. Jus sweet bully buns lol!

one of my bullys is having this surgery next week by our Bulldog vet, by the same vet Elaine is refering too (this is our 'go to vet' for lots of our rescue dogs) and we are in the Nor Cal area, the cost is around $700-$800. $1000 is a big variance in price. You definantly want a vet that has done many of these procedures on Bulldogs.

Elaine I hope you dont mind me asking, but how much was the tail amputaiton??? We have a tail pocket that requires tail amputation and I was just curious on how much this surgery costs... We have been to 2 specialists and the prices are like 1000 dollars in difference. Both orthapedic vets are reputable but not sure why such a difference in price...??? Thanks in advance

This is actually a clinic listed as a bulldog vet on the list here. But I did not get a good vibe from them at all. I took Toby to the opthamology dept at Texas A&M and they said he did not need it. It has been several years and he has been fine. Except he did have a hair grow inside one of his eyelids that they had to remove (this was not a problem when the original vet said he would need the entropian surgery).
I fostered a rescue who had his tail removed. Within just a few days, he seemed not to be sore or bothered by it at all. Before, he had a very tight screw tail. He wouldn't even let me touch his hind end. Soon after surgery, he had no problem with me wiping his rear. Stitches were removed in two weeks and he was better than new.
I've fostered many dogs after entropian surgery. They usually have to wear an E Collar because as you can imagine, it must itch and they want to face surf on the carpet or rub against the bushes outside. Can't have that or you'll be looking at a second surgery to redo stitches. They all like a warm wet compress in the eyes in the morning when they first get up and evening before meds to loosen the gunk that sticks to the stitches. They get eye lubricant 2x's a day and stitches out in 10-12 days.

to watch out for it -kinds like a mily grey spot in the corner of her eye ; because her eyelids/eyelashes are turned inwards and the vet said thats what makes her eye tear excessively and she squints !
i asked the doc if she would grow out of it but he said "no" !
A stick in the yard? A piece of dirt on the floor of the house? I would ride it out a bit longer and let her face/eyes grow before you start to really worry...

scratch on her eye. ....
bruce has issues with his tail..he is very unfomfortable with it and slides his butt on the floor (its not the anal glands.... i thought that was the reason for his butt rubbing but it is the taile ), and he screams and crys when i clean or dry it.... ,the underside smells bad and is brown/black the vet is having another look at it in march when he is due for shots !

Their entropian procedures were performed by laser, and there was no need for an e-collar. AJ had surgery at the same time for elongated soft palate, and both were also neutered. Coop was his old self the day following surgery. AJ was himself two days after the procedures, but he went through a little more than Coop. Good luck!

refer to Michelle's post..
same vet. I don't know how much rescue was charged for my foster rescue's tail removal.

Or a scratch from the puppies playing together
Wait as long as possible on the entropian.

Does Bruce have a tail pocket?

IMO Jackie is too young for entropian
Her head is going to grow and change a lot in the coming months and sugery may not be necessary. Is Bruce having tail infections?
