sooo what exactly is the point of microchip....

if your dog can still get lost/taken and noone can pinpoint them??? just curious cuz we were told we should consider it,but why??? I mean isn't that the point??...so when they are lost they can be found or am I all wrong on that...

If your dog gets lost...

If your dog gets lost anywhere in the USA, a vet or animal shelter will be able to find out that you won the dog and they can contact you. If your dog gets stolen, it's also proof of your ownership.

Canada has a different system (the same system ,I believe, as Europe), but all chips installed are good in the US.

It's worth the money for the peace of mind and the safety of your dog.

ohhh i c.....

well still there must be a lurker of sorts in that area I'd say for this to have happened more than once....Dumb people suck....

Most, if not all, shelters, vets, Petsmarts, etc..have scanners.

for the chips. If your dog goes missing and is turned into any of those types of place, including police departments, they will be scanned for a chip, and that is how you get your animal back. My 4 dogs and both cats have microchips.

Amy and Sophia

The dogs were not taken from Mel

2 Were from a friend of ours that Mel shows for. Neither were taken from Mel when she had them.

vikcy

can't imagine going thru this more than once..oh my gosh

NM

I am pretty sure I would move....

from that area or be outside with my dogs at ALL times if this is the 3rd taken from her...How crazy!

Holy cow,

I can't believe this has happened to her before! Twice! UNREAL!

Thanks in my hurry forgot those points

One of the Dogs Mel showed to her Championship was stolen

she was returned 10days later. the police came up to a truck who was dumping garbage off, they men ran away and left a bulldog in the cab of the truck.

The police scanned the bulldog and called the owner on file, they thought she might know about the dumping and was part of it.

she got her girl back!

Another of her dogs was stolen a few years before this and before chipping was popular. HE was returned via the UPS man. She had DNA as she owned the dad, mom, grandma, grandpa......

you're too late! See link...

GPS..

I saw on the news they put in kids sneakers now

Microchip...

Most every shelter, scans an animal (dog/cat) that comes in...its the first think they do. They want to get the animal back to the owner. And also, if they are picked up as stray or neglet, abuse case....they know who's animal it is

Pam Grady Burnice's picture

Doggie GPS...I'm with you!!

I think they should do kids too...I don't get the problem with that, who cares. I think I'd rather get my dog or kid back!!!

right that is why I was havin trouble....

with the whole concept..Cuz there are alot of morons like that out there that would just say "oh he's mine.." but I suppose if you go all out like everyone is tryin to get Mel to do..ie call police, call news,etc...then even if the thief doesn't take it in to be scanned, if a passerby sees him and watched the news the night before, atleast if they call it in under suspicion to the police, then it could be returned to it's rightful owner...soooo I guess microchippin Kahlua it is for me!!!!....Too bad they don't have Doggie GPS....Anyone wanna go in on the invention?????

The point is if someone finds the dog they can take it to a vet

it isn't much use if the dog is stolen unless a vet is suspicious and decides to scan the dog.

Yes...it's a shot in the top of their neck...

that's where they did Grady's. Our other dogs had it done when they were neutered or spayed so I didn't see where it went.
A bulldog especially doesn't even feel it with their thick necks. The chip is TINY you can barely see it.
I did a walk in with Grady and not even at his regualr vet...no appointment. It took 2 seconds like I said and then you just have to fill out
the paperwork of register online. Go for it!

Its for vets and shelters to scan dogs that come in

who may be lost or suspected of being stolen. Owner first contacts the vets in the area and shelters and supplies the details about the dog and picture. When someone brings in the dog saying its their dog but has no history there, a vet can make up some excuse and take the dog out of the room and scan it, if its a match, he calls the police right away and finds a way to keep the person or obtains everything he/she can about the alleged owner (same goes with the shelters, unless they have their own law enforcement officers who can also arrest them and take them to the local police).

Well worth the initial charge to have a vet or health clinic to do it which is about $25 - $30 and I think another $12 or $15 to register with the HomeAgain or Avid companies.

Its also proof that the dog belongs to you...

say someone calls Melanie and says they saw Pepper in someones yard or in front of their house, or at their house while visiting. Melanie calls the police and they go over there to see. Guy says thats his dog. Well being the Pepper is micorchipped, there is no way to dispute that is her dog, and then they can press charges against who has her.

But yes, the main purpose is that if your dog gets lost and whoever finds him/her turns them in to a vets office or the humane society- or picked up by the pound- they can get him/her back to you.

Kinda like tatooing your name and phone number on your dog just in case they get lost.

A microchip works best with honest people...

if your dog gets lost & is taken to local shelter, they can scan the body to see if there is a chip & then contact owner. However, if someone steals your dog...only if that person then tries to take them to a vet, then the vet can find out if this is really the owner of the dog.

Also I'm sure (and hoping) people have gotten busted at the vet.

At some point you need to bring a dog to the vet.
I would think most vets would be savvy enough to suspect a stolen dog and scan it.
They can look up the dog and see if it's reported stolen.

true true....

just weighing the benfeits and such...I mean I probably will have it done just for my own piece of mind like you say,but I was curious...thanks for your takes on it though....It literally only takes a couple mins to do it???

Pam Grady Burnice's picture

The human society has scanners too as do most places like that..

they get a lot of lost dogs.

That's ok...it's a strange concept if you think about it!

the CKC uses them on the registration

papers. Here all dogs must be ID'd before they leave the breeder. You can use tattoos or chips..although tattoos are being phased out.
All vets, AC and Hs have scanners and scan for chips.
If your dog is found it is scanned and the info used to contact you. Also if you need to prove the dog is yours if it is stolen the chip proves who owns the dog.

If you breed....rescue

ohhh duh...i get it now....

sorry little slow today..hehe..so what your saying is that it IS for the purpose of getting the pup back to the owner...It's just that if you found a dog that is in fact microchipped you the "finder" has to take it to a vet's office in order for them to scan it and see where it came from....???? but what about those jerks who don't take it in and report it??? No way of finding them then right??? It's not like a sensor chip or anything???...and really, how many people would think to take it to the vet instead of calling humane society or whatever, cuz how would they know your dog has a chip in it???...

Correct Melissa

but here it only cost was $25.00 and for me it was worth it, I travel alot with my dogs and kids and if they would ever get lost I would be heartbroken, even if we never use the chip it is like a little insurance for me

Pam Grady Burnice's picture

It's if your dog goes missing...anyone can take a collar off a d

with a microchip it's permanent!

microchip

I was not going to get one, but I ran into a woman at a pet store, and she told me that her dog was neve allowed out alone and always on a leash, but she had him microchipped anyway- one day when they were out for a walk, there was a sudden thunder storm, her dog spooked and gave a sudden pull and got away. Her dog was found by a person who took it to a vet , had it scanned and she got her dog back later that day. I got Onslow microchipped soon after that.

Yes they scan the dog...here's a site, I highy recommend microch

it's not that expensive and it takes 2 seconds at your vet!

http://www.homeagainid.com/

ohh...so you pay all...

that xtra money for that??? Can't you just tell the vet who ya are??? hehe...Sounds silly to me...Maybe I should consider getting specifics beforehand cuz it doesn't sound to me like anything worth while...I mean, when you call the vet, they ask you all that from the getgo anyway if you are a new patient....Dunno....

Microchip

the way I understand it the chip is fot vets to scan when the dog is brought in to them for care and then your name and information will come up, say this vet has never seen this dog before??? I might be wrong but that is how they explained it to me
