Somebody enlighten me. Why would you feed a dog "Vegetarian" dog food?

I see vegetarian dog food in the stores and I just don't get it. Why would anyone feed a meat eating animal a vegetable based food? I never looked at the ingredients though.

allergies

my friend's bulldog in Texas has flamming allergies to a ton of different proteins so she's on a vegetarian diet - I think she gets a kibble from her vet for it

Extreme allergies?

Veggies for special needs dogs? Can't imagine any other reason.

Jez was on vegetarian her whole life and did great

for some reason Jez just couldn't digest regular dog food. Every time she would throw up, she was running the risk of aspirating and then of course followed by pneumonia. The vet put her on vegetarian when she was about 2 years old. She stayed on that the rest of her life. She had a great coat, never had any more tear stains and had firm hard stools. Best thing I could have done for her

have to remember....

i have three freezers...that are always full of something.....i never pass up a deal....so i could go for almost a year without buying anything i have that much.....i buy 5 spring lambs at a time...and have them done up.....1/2 cow is alot of meat.....most of my crew is around 52 lbs thats only 1 1/2 lb a day of meat a day so thats 7.5 lbs a day times 7 days is 52 lbs a week... 210 lbs a month.....so round it off at .90cents a lb its about 189 dollars a month....thats with five dogs....and even that is high....because chicken is alot cheaper.....and i use mostly chicken with beef and lamb mixed in......i can do chicken which is my main protein for 30 cents a lb...and thats alot of chicken....when ever my grocery store is having buy one get two for free chicken my family always grabs me packages of the stuff....i have them very well trained....on buying for the crew....and they are very faithful on hormone antibotic free meat....
the biggest cost is the freezers.....then getting a couple hundred lbs of meat....once you get over that...its cheap...you just look for bargains....you would be surprised at some butchers....rather than losing money...they"ll sell you the meat at cost....
its a daily thing once you start living it you dont even thingk about it.....and right now i have only three dogs.....

ROTFLOL! I would end up with a bunch of farm animals too!

especially the rabbits. We had house rabbits, one of them lived for 8 years in the house! I could NEVER raise them for food.

yes, me too..

If I had one that just couldn't tolerate kibble, I would cook or feed raw. So far, our issues are time consuming, but still manageable. Belle may be borderline. Heading to the vet right now to check her crystal status.

I spend more than that on kibble..

Yea, I don't have any connections. I couldn't raise rabbits or chickens to eat. I'd end up with 6 dogs and a slew of farm animals to feed too! LOL

Your dogs look great! I'd imagine that raw is wonderful for the sick rescues. Lucky dogs.

for 6 dogs? How much is it weekly for 1?

part of the problem when I was cooking for three was no room in a Sub Zero side by side freezer. Plus, I found myself shopping and cooking all the time.

Just feeding dry kibble to 6 dogs is time consuming. Takes me about an hour to dish it out, give meds, and walk or potty everyone. I've got 6 dogs eating 5 different foods.

all who come thru my door are on raw.....

i am lucky because it is just me....i have no kids...I own my home and am self employed....have 4 great connections with butchers.....
i also buy cows with my brother and we split it in half (he has a large family)..... so with butchering and my cuts are not fancy.... i am paying 90 cents a lb.....in the spring i buy 4h ;lambs at auction...with butchering no fancy cuts is about a dollar a lb...a friend and i raise rabbits for food....and we give so many away for free butchering and meat....we also have chickens we use for eggs and meat...i do alot of bartering....it takes a little work but their are alot of ways to make it work.....and believe me i cut my vet bills in half....
so if i break it down its not any more then a 100 a month for 5 dogs.....and remember i eat this also...so its not for the dogs benefit....

Raw really ins't that expensive when you do it in large bulk...

If you've got a good deal with a butcher or get in on a co-op, and lots and lots of room in many freezers, you can do it really inexpensively. happy.gif

If my dog was having THAT severe of a problem

I really think I would give up on commercial dog food entirely.

only....

in an extreme case to clear out the system i have two diets i use as a cleaning the system...have used them on two rescues....i use them for 2 wks then on raw...or if over 6 lightly seared diet....

I used the vegetarian because......

it was lower in protein and allergy formula. My dog didn't like it very much (maybe didn't have much taste) so I switched to Sweet Potato and Salmon which is still a allergy formula and grain free product. It is a little higher in protein though.
