Slow progress with Dolly's eye...

We're faithfully doctoring Dolly's eye (corneal ulcer) with her ointments but she's still squinting & it's still bothering her. The Vet's office phoned this AM to check on her & to remind us of our Monday appt. I'll be glad for the vet to look at it again & maybe by Mon there will be some more improvement.

Also O/T, my husband is scheduled for spinal decompression surgery on Wednesday 2/3. The procedure is called a laminectomy. He's supposed to be kept only overnight & home the next day. So for right now, we are kind of pathetic around here. I'll be glad when Dolly & DH are both back to "normal". happy.gif

Thank you, Barb...

I appreciate the good wishes. Sometimes when we get to the end of our rope, we have to tie a knot & hang on! happy.gif

Thanks Ela1ne & Judy...

It's good to have a "heads up" about what might happen so I'll know what the vet is talking about, if it comes to that. I hope too that it's actually healing & the vet will think it's doing OK. Worry,worry...

Thanks Andrea...

Dolly has a corneal ulcer that started last Sunday---got her to the vet on Monday. I'm guessing she scratched her eye on a bush or something outside. Anyway we've got 2 kinds of ointments & we return for a recheck next Monday. Always something!
Thanks too for the good wishes for my husband. happy.gif

Thanks Olivia...

We're trying every which way to get her eye open---we'll make more effort to get that lower lid down. Amazing how tightly she can close that eye! And thanks for the good wishes for my husband. happy.gif

thats what charlie had to have....

after all the work of having the hair lasered off...entropian on both eyes...his left eye healed very nice his right eye would not....and thats what we had to do go in and scrape it....what worries me is they can only do this so many times....
so a special prayer to your guardian angel dolly that your eye heals quickly....
[linked image]

Judy...you may be hearing the term "ketatotomy"

because sometimes when an ulcer takes "too long" to heal its because there has been a ridge of cells growing around the edges of an ulcer and those need to be removed to allow a new layer of cell growth all across the sore...thus a surgical procedure to basically scrape the cornea and start again...this is often done with a chemical application but sometimes with a surgical (tool) procedure and in either case, the customary wound is then protected by raising and tacking up that 3rd eyelid for about a week, providing a 'natural bandage' that will hopefully encourage healing, keep the area moist/protected from blinking=rubbing while still allowing some medication to wash over the eye by its natural tearing effect, distributing the drops or ointment the vet will have you adding 3-4xDay. I make these suppositions based on what was routinely done when I worked at an ophthalmic vet office more than 10yrs ago, but I believe that the treatment is still pretty standard response. Maybe she's healing better than you or I suppose and is just very sensitive to any eye discomfort, causing her to squint...let's hope so...any surgery has its attendant risks. Hugs to Dolly. happy.gif

Judy,

I have had tons of experience with the eye thing over the years, I missed your post about our dear Dolly.

they can take awhile to heal depending on the severity, of course. Can you update me on what happened? I will try to go back and see.

I hope your husband will be home and healthy again soon. My biggest and best prayers to you and yours,

Your friend,

Andrea

Good thoughts and prayers, Judy

For both patients!
BTW - I read about Dolly's super strong eyelid muscles...lol. You may find it easier to just pull the lower lid down (instead of prying the upper lid up) and putting the drops/ointment in the little pocket that forms. Once the dog blinks, the meds are spread over the eye.
As for the DH - Bill is right (did I just say that?? lol). It's amazing, with the new techniques, how quickly they recovery!

Hope that helps your Dad too...

I don't know much about sleep apnea but we've had some friends who have been tested for it lately too.

You know what, we had to cancel our Caribbean cruise which was scheduled for Feb 21st. That added insult to injury! Oh well---we can always schedule another in the future. Sid has to be able to walk first!!! happy.gif

Yes, dh has had a time of it the past two winters. I hope after this he will be fully repaired & functioning normally! happy.gif I need a magic wand to wave over Dolly to speed the healing process.

We did have to cancel a Caribbean cruise we'd scheduled beginning Feb 21. That was kinda sad---but oh well---there can be other cruises in the future. happy.gif

Thanks You...

I appreciate your message & good wishes.

My husband's doctor is very matter of fact about the surgery---says dh will be up & walking the same day. We're looking forward to having it over & getting to the recovery side of things. Dolly is resting & taking it easy---like she always does! happy.gif

I thought I had read your DH's surgery was soon. It sounds like

they have a good plan for finally getting him some relief. Poor Dolly-gurl, I hope you will begin to see improvement soon. Winter seems to be the time for health issues. Hugs to them both from the snow bullies in S. Missouri.

Judy...........

Dolly's eye will take a while because the tissues are moist and take longer to resolve. The meds and your TLC are wonderful for her needs right now. And a couple more days should make a difference even if it's only slight. As far as your DH, thank God laminectomys aren't like they used to be. Medical science has progressed incredibly in the last 25 or so years. The new tecniques are amazing. To have that surgery and be home all in the same day staggers my mind. In case you're wondering, I spent 24 years as a court reporter and I specialized in medical terminology. We deposed thousands of doctors and they would always testify about their procedures. We hope and pray all goes well and there is a quick recovery and his back is better.

Hmmmm...that's interesting...

About the debriding...I hope we don't have to go thru that too. Dolly had an ulcer previously when she had entropion---eyelashes rubbing on the eye. That seemed to heal up pretty quickly once the entropion was fixed. Dolly's squinting reminds me of when she had entropion & I wonder if she has eyelashes rubbing again. We'll just have to see what the vet says on Mon.

And yes, I hope after the hubby gets "laminated" that he'll quit having these various health issues. How's this for pitiful: We had to cancel a Caribbean cruise that we had planned for Feb 21.sad.gif Oh well---there can be other cruises in the future...

Boy, a rough time for you guys

First, strong positive thoughts for your hubby on his lamination. Umm, I mean laminectomy. happy.gif

Secondly, when Stella had an eye ulcer, we were on ointment for WEEKS. It didn't work for her. We had to go to the opthamologist for "debriding", where they rescratch the eye with a little needle (one anaesthecit drops required). This supposedly stimulates the body into doing its job in fixing the eye (I chalked it down to Stella's laziness that it wasn't happening on its own). Keep us posted on the appointment on Monday!

flbulldogmom's picture

Dixie squinted a lot during the heeling process too

it was really sad for us to see...but she did get better, just a real slow process

will keep you and your husband in thoughts and prayers too!
