I'm hoping someone may have some idea what's going on with Chalmer. First a little background....at 4 1/2 months he was diagnosed with demodectic mange. That had pretty much completely cleared up when he got a skin infection. He was put on cephalexin for 10 days and it looked as if the infection was gone. Then a few days later it started to reappear. 10 more days of cephalexin. Then he attended Bulliefest and got the infamous URI that so many of them got. Another 10 days of cephalexin, he will finish tomorrow.
He is eating Pro One adult lamb and rice (he's always eaten lamb and rice), he has a pet tab, 25mg of zinc and a fish oil capsule daily and I just recently started adding yogurt to his food in the morning.
He recently started licking his paws so I put him on benadryl twice a day. Then on Tuesday he scratched a couple of places raw on his shoulder and neck. I cleaned them with peroxide and applied gold bond. They are healing nicely but today he did the same thing on the other side and again I treated it with peroxide and gold bond. The thing that's weird about the spots he scratched is if you feel the area it's raised and hard. Do you think it's allergies? Hot spots?
On a side note, I just gave him a bath tonight and he rubbed around the carpeting like he usually does but was overzealous in his efforts to wipe off the shampoo smell and before we knew it he had he rubbed his face enough that he looks like a prize fighter...one of his eyes is nearly swollen shut. It's like he doesn't know when to quit, scratching, rubbing, whatever....doesn't seem to even feel pain....seems like it would have to hurt to rub and scratch till swollen and oozing. I had read that they have an extremely high pain tolerance but even to the point of self mutilation?
He goes to the vet again on Monday, but I really would like ideas from what I consider experts here on this board. Everyone trusts you all as much or more than their vets and I'm no exception!
Thank you so much for any advice or ideas you all might have.
