Silly Question and a favor...

Could anybody post a picture of their bullies toes!!!
Is it me, or when the bully is full grown is it hard to cut their toe nails short?
Im wondering if Milo's are too long, I cutt them once a month but it's hard, besides the fact he sounds like a squeeling pig in pain when I do it, the nails just seem really tuff and I was wondering how short u cutt yours!

Thanks!

We trim Lilys maybe every two weeks.

I use a clipper, she just lays there and lets me, Then I put lanolin on her paw pad. She gets a doggy pedicure. She also is a cement a lot in the back yard

They look a little long in this pic but that is about right.

We lay Maggie on her back...

..and I scratch her belly and John trims the nails.. We got one too short last weekend and she bled all over the place..

We used a styptic pencil to stop the bleeding.. ..Don't forget to wet the pencil first.. (DUH!!)

I've posted this before

We have cut Sumo's nails weekly since we got him at 10 weeks old. It never bothered him and he lays like a big lump while we do it. As he got older he developed the longest thickest nails with huge quicks. Some dogs just grow big thick nails even with constant trimming.

We still cut them weekly and while they are long, he walks fine but sometimes will click on the tile. Walking on cement will help to wear them down.

Thats OK

Great pic, thanks for posting it.
Gosh Darn I love Angus, he's so perfect!

Hmmm

We do have all those Department stores but they're made out of grass shacks lol! Joking!

Yep I've missed it all together, Kewl I'm going to pick one up today - all this talking about toe nails and I went and cutt both Gerties and Milos.. Milo did better this time - only because I held his foot so tight he didn't have a chance lol!
And Gertie actually liked it, she wanted to chew the nail clipper lol!

LOL....

Del Ray falls asleep in my lap while Cole clips her nails right after her bath... Can't imagine her being all wired!

You're welcome!

I'm surprised you've missed the threads about Dremels before.

I was just in Home Depot last weekend in the tool aisle and I THINK I vaguely remember seeing the Mini Mite for $30? Maybe? It's definitely worth the lessening the stress on Milo.

WalMart, Lowe's, Home Depot, Sears... they all carry them. You have those in Hawaii, right? Hee hee.

Julia

Thank you!

So it's like a nail manicure then lol!!!
Are they worth getting?

Toes

Here is a ic of angus i shot it from the other end of the bed. I got down on my tummy. I dont know why he does it but he will hang there with his head under the bed for hours. There is nothing under our bed, just dust bunnies. ANYWAY there is a good shot of his toes. We file them with a big acrylic nail file. SOmetimes heis in the mood, sometimes not. But I do like everyone else just do a few at a time!!

Julia's picture

NO! It's not really that big! I swear! =)

The mini-mite is much smaller!!!!!!! And that's a zoomed in pic.

Did you read what I wrote under the pic? You just grind very gently, shaping the nails, in short burst.

Check out the Dober Dawn site... she's got AMAZING instuctions on how to introduce your dog to them and how to actually use it.

http://www.doberdawn.com Scroll down in the left column and you'll see it.

Julia

How do you use it

Yikes is it that big!!
How do you use it exactly? ha like Milo is going to go for this???!!!

This is a Dremel tool...

It's like a mini sander that you put a little drum on. I don't have pretty fingermails, but someone told me it's like a thing manicurists use.

The smallest, most dog appropriate size is the Mini-Mite.

http://www.doberdawn.com is the site we all recommend when first learning how to Dremel doggie toes. (I can't remember the exact link... don't have it bookmarked.) You have to only do it in short bursts so as to not grind down or heat up too quickly.

Julia

Your Bullies get drowsy after a bath?

Jeesh your lucky mine get so haywire, they have to run laps in the back yard after they're done lol!

it never rains over here lol!

Once a year and thats it DARN IT!
I need to move to England lol!

Julia

What is Dremel ???

And also the quick Recedes? Maybe thats our problem, we dont cutt them enough so the quick shoots out more?

Just keep trying

Even if you get to just TOUCH one nail a week, dont' give up.

Chalmer's a squealer too! Now I use

a dremel tool. He doesn't mind it at all. I try to do it about once a week. I really can't let it go much longer than that. His nails grow incredibly fast.....faster than any dog (other breeds) I've had in the past.

Another hint...

We do ours right after a nice warm bath...so the puppies are a little bit drowsy and more relaxed.

Not a silly question!

You should trim nails about every 10 days to keep the "quick" short. I use a dremel every 7 to 10 days to buff them down and rounded. The longer between trims, the longer the "quick" will get and the harder it will be to cut the nails without cutting into the "quick" resulting in bleeding.

On a young pup, I trim a nail or two each night to get them use to me trimming and as they get older it get easier. If nail trimming is a bad experience, they will remember and fight you - some will always fight.

"The more I know humans, the more I love my Bulldogs."

Secret to short toe nails..

Is start YOUNG!!! Jesse's barely show out of his fur and they do not touch the floor.
I use a dremmel tool, Jesse tolerates it. Dont try to do too much at once, even if you only get two or three done each day.

Don't worry!

A great way to keep nails short is to walk your Bully on the pavement after its been raining because rain makes the nails soft and they will wear down quickly against a hard surface.
A rule of thumb is just take off a little and then go for a wet walk. (easier here in England!)
Julie.

Ask Shelly

She has Jesse's so perferct and SHORT, they look great. I'm trying to learn to do it, but a SLOW student, oh yeah, and Miss Maggie not wanting it has something to do with it.

Nails

Grover squeals like a pig too, Lisa. We've always been big fans of the Dremel method... but if we use the clippers, he's a squealer.

Once a month is, in my opinion, a long time between nail clippings. We might be freaks, but we do Grover's MAYBE once every two weeks, usually once a week.

I looked through all the pics on my website and nothing really showed them that well... but I've seen bullies with SHORTER ones! Once you get that quick to recede, it's pretty easy to keep them short.

Have you looked into the Dremel took? Milo might be a lot calmer...

Julia

I wonder the same thing

I feel like I am always cutting them because I am so afraid to cut the quick I never cut alot it is more like shaving them than cutting. lol
