Silly bulldog phobias

Good evening! I'm in the middle of reading THE BULLDOG BIBLE BY Tania Holmes (A MUST read for any new bulldog owner, by the way!) and she listed some things that bulldogs have an irrational fear of. I can understand vacuums and brooms but cookie sheets and tin foil? I didn't buy it for a second so I decided to test her theory out and I was shocked to see she was totally right. Tuffy freaked out at the sight of tin foil and my baking sheets and began to cower in a corner like he'd seen the big, bad wolf. It was so cute and pathetic at the same time. So this made me wonder what other bulldog phobias y'all might like to pass along...

Tuffy's Mama

the EVIL tape gun!

and anything very dark colored: bags, buckets, shoes, pants.

I don't think she's afraid of the vacuum, I think she HATES it! She attacks it like it's trying to suck her house right into non-existance.

it is probably the ghost

that is pulling the cushion off the sofa.

Retractable measuring tape, blower, vaccuum, brooms

mixers, just about anything that makes very loud noices!

Oh, also GHOSTs

I'm beginning to think Flynn sees ghosts. Almost every night while I'm watching TV or sitting at my computer, she will start barking and staring upwards. I look around and there is nothing, no flying bugs, etc. And Flynn looks scared. So maybe she is seeing ghosts. If so, I sure hope they are nice ghosts, [g].

Lol, excellent list, and I would add fallen sofa cushions . . .

Flynn will sometimes pull a sofa cushion off the sofa and then freak out what that creature is that is now laying on the floor. A few nights ago she woke me up at 3 am barking like crazy. For a while, I thot someone had broken into the house. I get out of bed, walk to the family room, and see her barking at the sofa cushion on the floor.

The broom, mop, anything that is out of place or shadowed.

Sophia will panic if anything is changed in our bedroom. She won't go near an open closet door that is supposed to be shut. She is afraid of my shadow, so I have to walk her on whatever side doesn't have a shadow on sunny days.

I haven't tried tin foil, but I bet everyone that reads this is going to!

not a phobia, but Jasper does not like.....

the noise spaghetti makes in the box. When I tip the box to get it out and the remainder slides back down , he will come running and barking from where ever he is. He absolutely hates the sound! When I make spaghetti I try to do so quietly, but sometimes I forget.

Bentley is scared of opened pop cans.

I am not sure if it is the fizz from the pop or what. He will run into another room and cow down everytime you show him one.

Helen used to be afraid when I would snap out the clothes...

when I was folding laundry.

How about large piles of snow, the coffee grinder, the sound of

silverware being put away, the swiffer sweeper, the broom, daddy's fishing rod, and the list goes on! They are so funny!

Bella...........

any change litterally can send her into a big fit. she is very odd that way. a plastic bucket in her way..that will make her free in her tracks..lol.
she was afraid of the swifter vaccum..but now she attacks it..lol
she will attack a shovel, a rake and things like that..
but if something is odd in the house..she hides for a bit until she is used to it

Gus on the other hand..has no fears at all
nothing scares him
he is right in the center of anything and everything
is something is in his way..he just pushes it out his way
that even includes the other dogs..lol
he walks around like he owns the place..
for being deaf..I thought he would have many fears..but NOT a one..

Bobo

isn't afraid of anything......sigh.

Same here only it's gets really bad when Lola goes on the alert

to the measuring tape, ironing board, plastic bags, sewing machine, as soon as she starts, Spike goes absolutely nuts!!!!!! He (they) have now made my shar-pei's afraid of the vacuum cleaner. They think they have to kill it!

TRACY!

I can't believe you said LADDERS!!!!! George FLIPSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS out when he hears a ladder moving or going up and down. We use to live in the city and had a huge pole in front of our place that they use to come fix all the time and you would think someone was trying to KILL George he would go so crazy.

Glad to know mine isn't the only crazy one about ladders!

Retractible measuring tape, mops, vacuum cleaner, step ladder, p

These are all an opportunity for barking around our house!

OMG

Ozzy too--we always joke that if you break into our house--you can take something just don't rearrange anything.

Thanks for sharing everyone!

I loved hearing about all these bully phobias! It's very funny. For tough looking dogs they sure can act kind of wimpy. Guess that's part of what makes them so endearing. Good thing I don't iron or poor Tuffy would have yet another thing to be afraid of. (lol!)

Tuffy's Mama

The hand mixer, food processor, blender...

or just about most kitchen appliances that make noise. happy.gif

Maybe it is the ghost

...of a fallen couch cushion. wink.gif

I am always eager to believe that my animals can see ghosts, because I want to see one so badly! My first cat, Baby Bear, was a wonderful enabler of my obsession - she was a champion creepy-starer-at-nothing.

Maybull used to be afraid of paper grocery bags.

She isn't so much any more, but we could keep her out of a room by putting a paper bag in the middle or by the door.

she was afraic of the Hoover vacuum cleaner but is much less bothered by the Dyson.

When I was a kid, the bulldogs LOVED being vacuumed by the old canister vacuum we had. It would suck up their loose skin and I think it was like a massage for them.

Ladders and anything moved out of its normal area...

I think mine had ocd lol if we move things around they bark and do the pounce (like playing/trying to scare it) until we hold onto whatever has them freaked so they know they can come up to it then they are fine.

Re: Plastic bags...

Hmmm...Maybe I'll try that when he's terrorizing the kids!!

Thanks for the post!

Tuffy's Mama

Plastic bags...

ESPECIALLY garbage bags or the plastic bags from the grocery store. One little ruffle of the bag and George runs for the the hills!

Krazegurl_ds's picture

Plastic bags, paper sacks,brooms,mops ect..ect..

Dozer is scared of some of the weirdest things. Today on our walk in our new neighborhood the ice from our recent ice storm was melting and falling off the trees in big chunks. Everytime we'd be near a tree and ice would fall out Dozer would panic and runn as fast as he could til he hit the end of his leash. I think we'll wait to walk again til the ice all melts. But he's also scared of the broom and mop. One day the broom fell across the hallway and Dozer wouldnt step over it for anything. He hates the broom.
