Sheding question? Please help!

1st, did I even spell sheding right or am I retarded?

Lily has been sheding alot lately. It doesn't seem like there is alot of hair on her bed or when she lays on the couch. But there is a ton of hair in her crate. Far more then normal.

She is still doing alot of itching and scratching. I have been giving her a liquid supplement on her food for coat and skin and it has improved though.

Could it just be the season or could this be from all of her itching?

I feel really bad and am not quite sure what to do about it. Do to certain things that have happened, I just don't have the money to take her to the vet right now. I have called all the vets in the area and none of them will bill me for it.

Can someone give me any ideas as to what I can do or what I can give her?

She is scratching herself to the point where she gets little sores that form scabs over them. And it is really making her coat very spoty.

I have given here benadryl, the food supplement, shampoos, and changing here food.

She was eating just kibble and Bits. Then I tried her on Purina One before she started this. She never was like this with Kibbles and Bits, so i just switched back to see if that was the problem.

Sorry no idea on how to help shedding...(lucky me)..nm

nm

both my dogs blew their coats

shedding like crazy. I just brushed Spike outside and tons of hair, I think it's the season. They both seem to do this twice a year, spring and winter. More now though.

Itching

Does she have any fleas? My previous bully had an allergy to fleas and grass(great, right?) She would get very itchy at times and the vet gave prednisone tablets for a short course to calm it down. I didn't know about food allergies, then. So I don't know if it would have made a difference. Realistically, I am not sure if it would have made a difference for her, but some believe in it. I like Wellness and Canidae. You can compare prices of these at petfood direct.com. You might be able to find a lamb and rice food of another maker to try her on near you.

Best of luck!

You're acutally VERY good with names! Yes, we give Lipiderm.

It works... EVENTUALLY. Doesn't kick in for a while though.

And honestly, we bought the liquid recently, because Grover actually LIKES it, and interestingly I'm not noticing as great a response as to the gelcaps in the past. Oh well.

other suggestions..

Mine love apples!! They will even eat the core. Raw carrots are a nice treat. Mine dont get many chew toys, just dont truat a bullie with chew toys, so they get crunchy fruits instead!

I'm terrible with names but,

isn't Lisa/Julia give their dog Lipiderm for their shedding and dry skin? Not sure but maybe it would work for her. Good Luck!

Thanks...

any other suggestions. My Golden Ret. loves broccoli, is that okay (she'll eat anything, outside of chocolate, I have guilt after reading some of the things I have read you shouldn't feed your dog...she is 16, fortunately I guess I haven't given her a lethal dose of anything. Poor thing, such a bad mommy )

BRANDS...

Nautral Balance, Wellness,Canidae,Innova, IVD (which is from the vet.)

Nikki..

I think the cook potato/sweet potato would be an excellent treat for the doggies!

Shelly...

Is it okay to cook potatoes or sweet potatoes, and give it to your bullie occasionally? I have Ruby on Eukanuba medium breed dog food ( what breeder was feeding and vet recommended ), I have to admit I get confused about all the talk of dog food on this board. Eukanuba certainly doesn't have a short list of ingredients. Anyway, just wondered about the potato thing as an extra or treat on occasion.

What brand are those foods?

?

Lot of bullies w/ skin problems

The reason I haven't answered is because I don't know the answer. Skin problems are complicated. Our bullie hasn't had these problems, but I've notice a lot have skin problems. Is there a possible allergy problem? Have you asked your vet about that? You could also simply have a heavy shedder.

Mike..

I would put her on a quality food, something with very few ingredients in it, like duck/potato, or fish/sweet potato. I am not a big fan of Kibbles and Bits, too many additives and by-products. And limit treats, make those quality treats also.

Nope, I'm in CA.

Just weird weather everywhere I guess.

I am in southern KY

nm

Are you my neighbor?

Lol...sounds like where I am at. Anyway, I can't really tell you what to do (especially if you are already adding oils to her food), I think sometimes some dogs just have sensitive skin like people.

I used to be a hairdresser (pre-children), and I know that brushing hair stimulates blood flow to follicles, and distributes oils. Maybe if you gave her a good brushing (5 minute+) with a bristle brush (like boar bristle) everynight, it would help. Plus it would remove all the loose hairs, and as a bonus, she would probably really like it. Something like a doggie scalp treatment. I'm not sure how much dogs hair/skin is like human hair/scalp, but anything is worth a shot.

It has been changing alot

One day it will be sunny and 80 degrees out, and then the next day it will be 60, cloudy and rainy all day.

Mike I would if I had any suggestions..I really would!!smile

I do hope you get some answers soon...and in the mean time...ce

also,

Has the weather where you are recently changed? Maybe from cold to warm and dry. With my Golden Retiever, I have noticed that changes in the weather can have an affect on her coat (but she sheds like a macine anyway).

Shedding

I was wondering the same thing. My 9 month old has been shedding ALOT lately. I think it is a combination of him losing hs "puppy coat" and the normal shedding season.

Don't bathe too often as it drys out the skin
Brush the dog with rubber brush to take off loose hairs and regular brush to clean and smooth the coat. If you do this every day for a week I bet you will find a big difference.

I doubt I can be much help, but...

Has your vet ever mentioned flea allergies? I know that flea allergies, can cause all sorts of issues (your dog doesn't have to have a gazillion fleas to be affected either).

Can someone else throw me a bone here?

Before it gets pushed down to the bottom.

Atleast you tried :)

Alot of people that know stuff like this won't even answer.

Well then Shoot---

Just ignore me!! Lol!!!

That is what I give her.

It is liquid that you put on her food that is fish oil and some sort of fatty acid.

re:

I guess if she never had trouble with it before then she is probably doing fine with it. Have you ever tried giving her the Fish Oil tabs? They seem to help Daisy quite a bit. She doesn't have the open sores though that Lily has, the poor girl.

I am sure someone here will have better advice for you. I sure do hope though that Lily will start to feel better soon!

I kind of figured....

That Kibbles and Bits wasn't the best food in the world for her. But she likes it the best and it never did anything to hurt her, so we stuck with it.

Someone had a post on food a few weeks ago and a ton of people said they feed their dogs Purina One so I thought I would try it. It wasn't helping her that is for sure, only making things worse.

So basically I switched her back to Kibbles and Bits, because I know she never had these problems while she was eating it.

Shedding with 2 DD's --- LOL --

Mike,

We give Daisy a supplement of Fish Oil 1000mg per day and a pet tab. I also brush her 2 times a day. It seems to help her.

Not to pick at you but the Kibbles & Bits really isn't that great of a dog food. You may want to try something better for your dog. We feed Daisy -- Canidae -- it is a premium dog food and is more pricey but you feed less of it so a bag lasts longer. To me though it is worth it. Daisy is soft and shiney. She had a bought with Mange when we first got her and the vet told us that some of the spots the hair may never grow back on her. Well, since feeding the Canidae, the spots of hair grew back and she looks great!!!

There are lots of premium dogfoods out there--Wellness is another brand that comes to mind.
