My Butchie has scratches on both of his corneas. he's been to see our Vet, Dr. Spector and Dr. did the eye stain and the florescent light test. Dr Spector did not see any extra eyelashes. We determined that Butch scratched his eyes in the Christmas tree.
That being said-I'm putting gentamicin sulfate in his eyes 3x's daily, one drop each eye. It obviously stings and causes him discomfort because he's trying to bite me when I do it. I'm also giving him a tablet and 1/2 of coated baby aspirin for discomfort and sometimes benedryl to help with calming him down. He's in an e-collar because he was making it worse by rubbing his face with his paws and in the carpet etc.
My question is-he will barely open his eyes, he keeps them tightly closed all the time. Is this normal? How long does it take for the scratches to heal? He's not himself and my heart is breaking.
can you tell me how it's supposed to look?
I'm not sure.
Keep a close eye on them!!
not to alarm you but sabel had this last year with 1 eye.. after 1 week, it was not any better- in fact was getting worse... we ended up at an opthamalogist at MedVet... after 4 weeks and up to 8 drops (3 different ones at once) she finally began to heal... The scratch began an ulcer and went very deep... We were headed for surgery when it fianlly began to heal...
Just keep close eye on.. everytime you put the drops in- look to see how it looks...
No advice but I hope Butchie's feeling better soon...
... poor guy.
Kari his eyes are probably sencitive to light that's.........
why he keeps them closed. As for how long it takes to heal I forgot already how long it took Stanley. Sorry.
Oh Kari!
Poor Butchie!!
Tillie had a horrible scratch on her cornea about 2 years ago. We also had to put an ointment in her eye, although now I do not remember it's name.
The she had to wear an e-collar for a good 3 weeks, and during those 3 weeks, we did go back and forth to the vet to check improvement. It was a deep scratch, and was very painful when it happened, she screamed.
BUT, she did keep her eyes open, unlike what you are saying Butchie is doing.
Poor Butchie, I hope you get some good advice, I hate to hear of him being in pain.
Awh-poor Butch!
Hope the drops heal those ulcers with no problems.
He'll start opening his eyes once the healing starts taking place, & it's not as irritating for him.
