A question for y'all about how dogs evolved??

Someone at a bar recently asked me a question about the history of dogs. He said if dogs descended from wolves, how did the first dog come about since there was not yet a dog around for a wolf to mate with. I wasn't sure of the answer but suggested that maybe DNA fragments or strands of chromosome fragmented or did whatever they do to evolve in response to the environment, such as when humans first took wolves into their camps and domesticated them. I also threw his question back at him and asked how come he doesn't look like a Cro-Magnon since there were no human chicks around for the first mating that resulted in a baby that looked less "Cro" and "Mo" human.

Does anyone have a better explanation?

He also wanted to know how long ago today's breeds began to appear. And how was the bulldog created? On the latter question, I told him I thought, but was not sure, that a mastiff was bred with a pug, then given a Budweiser.

Through thousands of years of selective breeding

there are depictions of dogs found in tombs that are believed to be 5000 B.C. We have such a narrow view of the existence of dog - ie. the American Kennel Club, humans have been using dogs in the remote areas of Turkey, remote islands, remote jungles for herding/flock guarding/hunting for thousands of generations.

"Dog" by Coppinger explains the evolution, good book, easy to read.

just read this last night in a bulldog book here..they say.....

the mastiff and the pug created the bulldog..
so guess you are right Gary
once again..lol
good job..

the book i was reading is raising a healthy pet..the bulldog second edition.
it goes on to explain that the couple raised Tess..one of the US marine I believe mascotts..
really good book and very informative..

I've read there are 14 references to the dog in the Bible.

That should hold him off for a while.

Gary, you are too funny! Have your friend check out Molossor

dog breeds. My research says many of those type dogs are in the genetic mix of the Bulldog.

Hahahaha!!!!

too funny! I bet the guy's head was spinning! such a DARWINIAN evolutionary theory for the much beloved dog!

Actually, I think the origins are from the DNA of the Catfish...strands combined with the dogfish and then! voila! THE BIG BANG THEORY...and...then...on the 8th day, THE BULLDOG WAS CREATED!

Actually you and he should read THE BOOK OF THE BULLDOG: Joan McDonald Brearly...I have the 1985 Publication...

"As RECENTLY as 60 MILLION years ago a mammal existed that resembled a civet cat and is believed to have been the common ancestor of dogs, wolves and coyotes. Miacis were long bodied, long tailed, short legged beats that stalked and chased their prey, grasped it in their long powerful, fanged jaws, and gnashed their food with their teeth."

this is a fabulous book! you will see CLOVIS' ancestors...with more than 450 photos and > 80in color! Seriously, you will love it!
