At my meeting with a breeder last week, I learned about a rather strange practice of impregnating dogs that I had never heard about, and wondered if others have used this method before?
It sounded basically like they cut open the dog's belly, like in a c-section, removed the uterus, cut it open, put the semen directly inside, stiched her all back up and sent her on her way. The breeder used this method as a "sure fire" way to get the dog pregnant because he said he had two people who had been waiting for puppies from her for two years. He was sure she was pregnant, as she began to look very pregnant, but a test at the vet a week after my meeting with him showed that the dog had a "phantom pregnancy" and did not catch at all.
I thought the whole thing was very strange and honestly a little extreme and could not imagine how a breeder who thought himself the "best in the province" could put his dog under such a procedure just because a couple people were impatient for puppies. However I'm not familiar with the whole thing, so perhaps this is more common than I'm aware of? I know that bulldogs are apparently pretty finicky when it comes to getting pregnant - is this sort of thing standard procedure??
Sorry for the long post!
ditto :O)

Surgical AI
Here is a link with a brief explanation of the procedure -

A surgical AI gives the Vet an opportunity to check inside the bitch to see if there are cysts on her ovaries, endometriosis or some other condition that has kept her from becoming pregnant with norman AI's. While it is surgery, it isn't as drastic as you might think - no huge incision like for a spay or C-section.
I recently opted for this on a very nice CH bitch of mine that has missed on 2 prior breedings with a normal AI. Several reasons in addition to the Vet's ability to examine her - the stud I used is older and his semen quality has diminished from when he was younger, my bitch is going to be 4 years old in May, and I really want a show prospect from her as I feel she has a lot to offer the breed.
i dont think so, its about timing and breeding
you can get the same amount of puppies from an AI as a Implant.
IMO right now, i have done 2 surgical implants with 1 small litter. I have had better luck with AI.

Agree Deb
This should definitely be a last resort with a worthy bitch. I couldn't imagine doing this just for the sake of doing it. Anytime one of our bullies goes under for any surgery it is a concern.

Re: Surgical Implant
Oh really? Is there a difference in litter sizes?
Surgical Implant
I believe it is becoming more popular of a procedure especially when you are using shipped frozen semen. I know a breeder in our area that is only doing surgical implants.
I personally would not opt for this method unless it was a last resort with a very worthy bitch. Just don't want to chance putting the dog under anesthia if you don't have to.
I had an interesting conversation in regards to size of litter using an implant vs fresh semen AI.
Re: Surgical Implant
Oh I am very glad to hear that it is not as drastic as I was imagining! Thank you very much.
Surgical Implant
It's not the "routine" way to get a bitch pregnant but reputable breeders will go this route when they have not had success with artificial insemination. I am actually doing this with a bitch that I have on her next heat. It is not "guaranteed" that your girl will get pregnant but gives her a much better chance. Your vet has to know what they are doing with progesterone and when to do the implant. I don't speak for all breeders but most will spay the girl if she does not take through surgical implant. It is not a large incision, very small and a quick procedure. I hope this helps you some on understanding the procedure.
