Question about supplements......please read

Okay, I have been on here for a little over a month or so and I see all kinds of posts about supplements and stuff I have never heard of. Diamond is our first bulldog. I dont give her any supplements and I feed her Eukanuba. should I be giving her supplements and vitamins and stuff. Some advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I am no expert but...

as far as I know it adds a lot of omega 3 fatty acids etc that are good for their skin, coat and immune system. It comes in a powder and there are 2 formulas. Regular and one for joints. I ordered it from petwebstore.com (link on homepage of bulldogsworld) and bruce told me to get the reg one at this point as dante is still only a pup. I got the small bag and it has lasted a long time. Let me know if you have any other questions. -ann

Is there something Diamond is deficient in? (long)

Kristae,
Just as with humans, whether or not a supplement will serve a purpose or not is dependant on what a dog lacks in its diet or what additional nutrients its system may need. If the dog has a lackluster coat, suffers from specific allergies, or has a health issue that could benefit from the addition of something like glucosomine, then he may benefit from a supplement. However, depending on the food you use, supplements like fish oil or glucosomine may already be added.

It's important to remember that too much of something can be a bad thing too - an overage of certain minerals can lead to deposits of these minerals collecting in major organs, while some are just flushed through the system without serving any purpose. Some supplements can be controversial, such as Concept-a-bitch, which is supposed to help bitches conceive and maintain pregnancies. This particular supplement contains raspberry leaves, which, according to an article I've seen written by a nurse midwife, is used holistically to stimulate contractions - maybe not the best thing to help a bitch support a pregnancy? Then again, I've heard of people who swear by it.

Personally, I've used Seameal and bee pollen to help with what appeared to be allergies which were resulting in coat and skin problems - no noticable effect. The only breedings I used Concept-a-bitch for didn't take. I used a fatty acid supplement to help coat quality also, which did make a difference, but became unnecessary when I switched to a fish and potato diet already rich in Omega 3s.

If you're unsure, I suggest you cut the daily nutrition and ingredient labels off everything you feed Diamond and write down what her daily regimen is. Show it to your vet, or a holistic vet, and ask for input. If there's a supplement you're interested in, compare it to the daily nutritional values your food is already meeting - if your food is at 100% of something, you probably don't need to supplement unless there is a specific problem that supplement would meet. If it's below 100% and the supplement makes up the difference, it may be worth considering.
