A question about stinky ears...

So, Chunk's right ear is his achilles heel. It is a constant problem. I have been able to get the infections down to just a few times a year. We did just recently go through a round of antibiotics (Zenequin - sp?) for the last infection and it worked wonders... My problem now is that his ear is still pretty stinky. I clean it regularly and I alternate the wash that I'm using (OxyFresh, an herbal one that I'm forgetting the name of suddenly made by Halo or something like that, sometimes just a mix of water, peroxide & cider). Additionally, Chunk is now on a Nature's Variety Frozen Raw as another step towards victory in the battle...

I'm thinking the continuing stink is a yeast problem. Does that sound about right? And if so, what now? Probiotics?

As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My vet told me to use

Malaseb wipes for Lucy's ears. They seem to be working really well

Try Malasetic Otic

After treating Bernard's ear infection, his ear was still smelly. Out vet recommended Malasetic Otic. You can use it frequently too. The ear smell disappeared. The product also smells good.

Ive heard of lemon juice for kids...

One or two drops changes the PH in the ear..bacteria is rapidly flushed out.
Wonder if it would work on Bullies?
Anyone heard of this and tried it?

I totally forgot...

..about the Monistat trick! That's a great idea! Thanks, Deb.

(And honestly, I don't really know what I think anymore... it's just the way it smells makes me think yeast. He'll be seeing the vet this weekend - I'm just looking for something to get us through the next few days... I'm gonna give the Monistat a shot.)

Chunk & the O-man say "Right back atcha!"

Thanks!

I'll be sure to give Chunk a smooch for you as long as you promise to give Onslow a great kiss from me!

If you think it's yeast

our rescue group taught me something that has been extremely helpful. With fosters that come in, there is usually some yeastiness somewhere - ears, nose wrinkle, between toes, under the tail, whatever. It was suggested that I get a package of Monistat cream, OTC at the drugstore or walmart or wherever and just apply the cream to combat the yeast.

It has worked for us like a charm - works amazingly quickly and seems to clear up some really bad yeasties in a couple of days. Plus, one package (probably $8-10 I don't remember but it was inexpensive) has treated numerous dogs.

For ears I just put it on a q-tip and treat wherever I can reach without getting too invasive.

Hugs to Chunkster and O-money and to you too!!
