Puppy Sleeping Question

I havent posted in awhile. I am Gia's mom and now we have a new baby american bulldog named Hanna. Hanna came home on 1-4. Heres my problem Gia has slept with us since she was 13 weeks old. I do not want her to feel misplaced because of this new puppy so I don't want the puppy to get in the habit of being in the bed. She's a baby and she cries when I put her in the crate that is in the bedroom with the rest of us. Needless to say the first night she ended up in the bed and last night I ended up on the sofa with her to keep her quiet and happy. Is there a trick to getting this baby to sleep in her crate?

sounds like a plan

Thanks!!

I did the same thing...

they will cry for a few nights..
put the crate right beside your bed
what a cutie..
I just put some household towels in there with the pups in the beginning..
were easy to wash if I needed too..

Thanks

We bought her a bed for right next to the bed when she gets older. I will replace the bed with the crate tonight. Gia was so easy when she came home never made a sound but this little one is loud!! I am hoping that since Gia is quiet that Hanna will take the lead and learn silence is golden from her.

Thank you

I would pull the crate right next to the bed so you can hang your hand down for her to smell and assure her through the night. Leave a tee-shirt you have worn in her kennel at night also. These steps have always worked for me. It may take a few nights. Good luck!

Patience and Ear Plugs!!

Thank you for all the advice...I will start from square one tonight!!

earplugs work well -

although it is difficult, it is best to ignore her crying and protests of the 1st few nights. She needs to learn to sleep by herself thru the night.

I agree with everyone else

about keeping the crate next to your bed and talking to her and put your hand down at night. Puppies learn to reapeat behaviors they are rewarded for, so if she cries and you take her out of the crate you are reinforcing the crying. Wait til she stops crying before you open the door.
What a CUTE puppy!

Ear Plugs!

I jest, I jest. In all seriousness, the puppy has whined two nights, and been rewarded two nights, so if you want her to sleep in the crate you'll have to tolerate the whining (unfortunately) it will stop when she realizes that it is getting her nowhere. Some will only take a couple nights, some will take longer. With the crate being in the bedroom I don't think it would take very long for her to adjust.

Also, if you don't want the crate right beside the bed, you can start by putting it there and as she learns to calm down with it there SLOWLY move it every night until it is where you want it (even in another room). Putting a t-shirt that smells like you is a great idea too.

I would also read up on crate-training and make sure to use the crate during the day too to make it a super happy place!

Patience is the key, and I've been there, I know it's not easy!

thanks she's a cutie

a little different than Gia she's going to be a really big bully!!

she has lots of energy

We did pretty good at wearing her out yesterday she was begging to sleep at 8 pm she was good until midnight then my night began!!

I think the key is patience....or sticktoitiveness.....

You have to be strong....if she knows that you are going to get her out, she is going to cry....crying isnt going to hurt her, its hurting you more than her....lack of sleep....but after a couple days she WILL stop, she will know the routine...the crate is the safest place for her too...what if she falls out of bed? Jumps out? you roll over on her?

Another thing is to wear her out before bed...walk her, play with her, make her tired....she is a puppy full of energy....burn that energy and she will want to sleep.
