Puppy Question

My new puppy is American Bulldog and she seems to be catching on to housetraining and other things really quickly. This morning we had a little incident that has thrown me off. She seems to understand that she needs to go outside to potty. We have had a few incidents where she hasnt made it time to go pee but she has not had a number #2 in the house at all. She will go to the door and push on it to go outside.

I also have a 5 year old female English. Gia is doing pretty well with the puppy. Gia is really selfish with her toys but it all seems to be working out in a mostly play fashion.

So this morning Hanna is playing with Gia and climbs on her back and pees on her.

This is the first time I have ever had multiple dogs. Is this something unusual or not?

Thanks for any input!!

I agree with Tom

I wouldn't read into this too much as Tom suggests. Dogs are not born knowing that they shouldn't go potty in a house, and they probably have a hard time of understanding the concept of humans thinking it's a 'bad' thing to do. Just stick to reinforcing your dog for going outside to potty and don't fret too much over an accident here or there.

As far as one dog peeing on another--dogs do this a lot and I have yet to find a good explanation of why they do it. Most behaviorists agree that there is not a linear hierarchy when it comes to dogs, so it's hard to say it's a dominance thing. Dogs do seem to like smelling urine and they seem to like peeing on various things. What if they view the scent of urine much like we view the scent of a great perfume or cologne?

It's hard to say what's going on inside of their minds, and instead of wondering why they're doing this, maybe we should start asking ourselves how to get to an alternative behavior if whatever they're doing is bothering us. happy.gif

yea I have been going back and forth

its the first incident of this kind. Thanks for your input.

this is the first dominate action that Hanna

has taken over Gia. Hanna will be taller than Gia at some point but not yet. Gia has been really possesive of her toys and anything that Hanna has Gia will take it away from her even if it something that Gia has never paid attention to before. I was scolding Gia for doing this to Hanna maybe I should stop so the Gia retains her position?

Thanks

Chances are

she is a puppy no matter how good you think they are doing there will be accidents. It is probably a coincidence that it happened on Gia's back. She probably got a little too overexcited and thats just where she happened to be. For right now I wouldn't read too much into it

Re:

In my experience a puppy learns to keep their home clean of poop 1st, the free of pee takes a bit longer.
But as for Hanna taking a pee on Gia - I would see that as a dominance thing. Hanna is probably bigger (at least taller) and is laying the framework to be top dog over Gia.
If my pups pee in the presence of the adults, and they do sometimes, it is a submissive pee where they are close to the ground with their head down or a bit sideways doing a supplication pose.
My suggestion is to closely observe the interaction between the 2 and if Gia is to retain her spot in the pecking order, let Hanna know she can't get by with that stuff.
Hopefully Lynn will respond and give you advise from her vast experience.

sounds like a dominace thing...but....

I had a boston one time that peed on a young pug. she did quite often outside of the house.
she great out of it in time.. but for her it was strictly dominance for sure.. it stopped as the pug grew older.
that is my guess anyhow

Thanks for all the replys!!
