Potty Training

Just wondering. We have been looking for a brother for Sheldon. I've read an aweful lot of posts here regarding crate training and was surprised that many of you get up several times during the night to take your baby's out to potty. We didn't have any bully (or any dog) friends to seek advice from when we first got Sheldon. No one told us to take him out to potty in the middle of the night. So we didn't. He always slept through the night and never went in his crate. Was this mean/bad? Is it really necessary to wake up and let the dog out in the middle of the night when we get our newbie? Thanks.

Re: Re: Re: Re: I know :(

I can't really afford it...I'd have to take out a huge loan, as I wouldn't be working while I'm in school. That's why its such a hard decision. Thankfully, the program is only for 9 months.

GREAT!!!

Re: Re: Re: I know :(

Only about 35 minutes from NYC...I'm in North west NJ

Good for you..if you can afford the full blown NY experience...go for it
Wish i could afford to live there but my mortgage on a house is cheaper then the rents

I'm on Long Island

If you decide to relocate I live just 20 minutes outside of NYC. My sister lives in midtown. Let us know we will definately hook-up.

Sue

it seems to me the rule of thumb is the age in month add one hou

so if the pupster is 2 months ..then three hours would be the limit...
also if they have to hold for too long they can indeed develope bladder and UTI infections..it's body waste and it needs to be flushed out ...ce

Re: Re: I know :(

If I go, I'm going for the full out NYC experience and plan to live it up, no matter the expense, which means living in Manhattan. That is why it is such a hard decsion. If I do go, I think I'll end up permantely relocating there. How far are you? We would love to make some bully buddies if we go!!!

Re: I know :(

No, I grew up just across the hudson....you may want to look into downtown Jersey City, Hoboken, weehawken
all right across the Hudson in New Jersey..15 minutes by train or ferry. all though not cheap, they are cheaper then NYC, especially the west village area around NYU

I found with Leeloo that her little bladder just can't hold it f

although that is improving, she turned 10 weeks, and she also does drink a lot of water since we're in Florida and although in AC all day she goes out in the heat to play and potty throughout the day. But I think different dogs can hold it for longer than others - kind of like humans, (I have to pee at least once during the night whereas my husband never gets up..) lol

I know :(

Kate,

Are you from NYC? I'm orginally from Long Island and am somewhat aware of the going rate in NYC. NYU is just such a reputable school and thier LLM tax program is #1 in the nation and might be worth going in to debt over. Still thinking about it.

Joanna

a bit of a different pattern here with MoJo...

we did get up every two hours at first....he was 6 1/2 weeks old..then about twice a night..till he was almost 4months old...he woke us when he had to go...little whimpers..and he did go each and every time..plus before bed..and first thing in the morning...our goal was to not let him start messing in his crate cause once they do it's tougher to stop..we were lucky in one aspect (not that APPROVE I do not)but because he was outside raised as soon as his feet touched the ground he would go both duties...
he never did have an accident in his crate...and only a few so far, pee accidents, in the house...has never pooped in the house..and I think he's got it now at 5 months...he's not had any accidents for awhile...
.....he goes out at 9pm and then to his crate with a treat and sleeps till about 5am..when we get up...
...I hear ya about the sleep...yawn...but it was worth it to me ..to get up for a few months ...and give him a clue that I meant it ..outside potty only please...I think each pupster will vary some...and
but they really can not be expected to go more then a few hours at night ..at a young age their bladders are too small....good luck....and happy bullie search....ce

I can attest to that!

I paid $1200 a month for a MATCHBOX. I'm paying less for my mortgage on a HOUSE in Connecticut now.

But NYC is so much fun. And NYU is a great school...

Julia

Not to butt in..NYU is great...but the rents in NYC will

bankrupt you

We used to do this with Molly when we first got her, then realiz

even when we did get up she was still wetting in her cage, guess it was the age, but we stopped and she stopped wetting her cage... when they are really really small I think its tougher for them to go all nite without peeing ... in the beginning we got up with Molly 2 times in a nite, then after a week we gave that up and shes been good ever since

Havn't made a final decision

I'm also considering NYU. However, my law firm is trying to convince me to stay down here. I think I'll most likely end up in Gainesville, as it is so cheap and my program is ranked 2nd in the country there. I'll expect to make a final decision with in the next month. Then, I will be taking a trip to G-Ville to find a place to live. I have only been there a couple of times, but my boyfriend is a die hard gator and knows the area well. I want to live somewhere nice, that isn't too far from the law school and isn't overflowing with college students (no offense, but I have no desire to be part of the college party scene--been there, done that). Any suggestions?

i'll be finished when i'm 80!

Summer school will end it August. This is just the second week. It is going well, thanks for asking!

Have you any plans to come check out Gainesville? Apts are really cheap here!

Emily

I like that answer!

My sleep time is valuable too! Unless I've misread, it sounds like people are waking up thier dogs to take them out to potty. I don't understand why this would be necessary. I certainly have no problem if the dog wakes me up, but waking the dog up just doesn't make sense to me.

How is school going? When are you finished? Smooches to Murphy!

Joanna & Sheldon

I didn't take Moop out...

shoot, my sleep is valuable!

LOL! Sometimes if he was crying (like the first few nights) I'd take him out. And sometimes he'd wake up and bark to let me know in the morning...cuz I don't like to get out of bed 'til past noon

And just today he was making a fuss at 6am and he decided he needed to go outside a little earlier then his normal 8am time (I'm up early for school this summer).

I guess what I'm trying to say is, it just depends on the doggie. Some can sleep almost the whole night, some can't, and it looks like Sheldon could! But unless they are waking you up or messing in their crate, I don't think it's neccessary to wake up to take them out at night.
