Bubba is the perfect dog 95% of the time but 5% of the time he is a complete monster. Whenever I pick up his lease he starts acting like a mad-man. He jumps in the air, barks like crazy, and runs around the house. When I do finally get the lease on him (after telling him NO, shaking a can full of coins, spraying him w/ water, etc..), he grabs onto his lease and wants to play tug-o-war. He then runs around with the lease in his mouth and humps me the entire way to the street or car.
While this behavior does drive me crazy, I can handle it. However, what I can not handle is when we get in public and around other people/dogs all he does is hump me. If I take him to the dog park, he doesn't even play with other dogs, all he does is hump me. Then, if I walk him down the street to a pedestrian shopping street near me and tie him to a tree or post for 2 minutes while I run inside, he barks. But the worst part is when I take his lease on and off to retie it or to put it back on him after he's had it off he barks so crazed that he scares everyone around us plus he is usually humping me too.
I don't understand because he is such a sweet dog most of the time and he is only crazy when we leave the premises of my house. Most of the time he sits like a good boy in the yard while I'm cleaning or on the computer. I don't even have a fence or anything but he wouldn't even think of wandering. However, if I put on my purse or pick up his lease, he is a MAD-MAN.
Any help is greatly appreciated. My theory is that he is so protective over me that he doesn't want anyone else or any other dog looking at me. As I've mentioned before I had to leave him for 4 months to go to Europe but he was living very happily in my house with my boyfriend/his daddy. I know Bubba is a serious mama's boy but enough is enough. I don't think it helps that my boyfriend recently moved out so I think Bubba is more protective. However, I love to take him places but it is completely aggravating. Two women at the dog park said "you must be so embarrased". I just don't want the neighborhood to be scared of Bubba but the way he acts, I'd be scared of him too if I saw a humping barking machine. Mind you, he humps NO ONE but me!!!
PLEASE HELP!
Re: PLEASE HELP.... I am at my wit's end (LONG)
Kim,
Who knows what kind of discipline he had while you were gone, and of course, you missed him so much that you're probably a little hesitant in being firm and correcting. However, a few firm and loud NO, grabbing him with the loose skin on his neck and putting him down in a sit while telling him NO or Off, and as Albert said about the Marching Band...lol...not heard it referred to that way, but it is true. As soon as he tries to jump up on you or grab your leg, come up with your knee into his chest and say NO. When he then stays down or sits, bend down and pet him telling him "good". But, as soon as he reverts back to trying to jump, immediately correct and be firm again.
The idea about a refresher course in obedience would be good.
re help
Humping you is his way of trying to be dominant over you. He needs to find out who is the boss. I agree obedience classes would help.
Marching Band
If he tries to hump you ! lift your your feet like a marching band with a little exageration and repeat this method over and over if he tries his thing for you :=).
Liz's advised is an excellent one and GOODLUCK :O ))
2 suggestions
every day pick up his leash and don't let him out. walk around with it, then put it down and do something else. ignore his inappropriate behavior and leash him only when he is calm. he associates the leash, with going out. if you pick it up, does he always goes out? if so, try that
even if you've taken one before, it's always good to take one again. it will reinforce you as alpha.
if he tries to hump you tell him no and put him in a sit/down, stay. if he can't do that, he needs an obedience class

*sigh* (no pic)
OK. OK. Too easy...
...the "Marching Band" idea sounds interesting, though but let me know where you're at so I can film it for "Funniest Home Vidoes", that'd be a shoe in!
You add the "staff" thing the Majorette uses and I'll give you 2/3rds of the winnings!
