o/t.....redoing my guest room..does anyone have a

platform bed? Pros...cons...
I do like the look of them and it would be for guest room so it would not be slept in every night

Great..I didn't know pottery barn sold them..I was looking

at this one as the other furniture is that brownish black. I'll have to check pottery barn..what type of mattress duid you buy for it.

I love love love it!

Pros: I love the fact that it's low on the ground, easy to get in and out of (atleast for me coz I'm only 5'2.) If you fall off the bed, it won't hurt. LOL. Bernard can easily jump onto the bed (but we still use steps for him.)

We got our Sumatra bed from Pottery Barn:

Cons: I can't think of any......it really depends on the mattress you put on it.

I'm not even going close to that..first off it's

a guest room and the room size limits me to a double bed or it would look to cramped with a dresser and bed table BUT I am now wiser thanks gary

That's a psychological block for me too

actually, I'm even lower, I have a hard time paying more than $1,100. I suspect those super expensive mattresses are more about slick marketing than actual substance.

You sure know your mattress.

I don't think I can buy a mattress that's over $2000.

I just bot a mattress after doing a lot of research

I almost bot the same one Wendy did, the Sealy Posturepedic Thistle Meadow Plush Euro Pillowtop. It is a gorgeous mattress. Sells for about $1,500 in stores, but you can it online from US-Mattress.com for $1,100 for a king size. Feels incredible to lay on. But my back when re-injured in April 2005 when I was rear-ended, and a lot of people said online that people with bad backs should stay away from pillowtops and getting a mattress that is somewhat firmer.

I ended up getting a Simmons Beautyrest that has the pocket spring system. The model I bot (being delivered this afternoon) is the same as the "Heavenly Bed" used at Westin hotels that many, many people rave about, but without the pillowtop.

If I was willing to spend the money, I probably would have gotten a mattress from the Simmons Beautyrest "Black" line. They felt just incredible, but they sell for about $2,500 to $4,000. A bit too much for me. They come in both pillowtop and non-pillowtop versions.

One thing I found interesting is that some of the really, really high priced mattresses, such as the ones that sell for $4,000 to $7,000 didn't feel all that great to me.

Oh, something else I learned in doing the research is that all the major mattress manufacturers such as Sealy, Simmons, Serta, etc. playing a dirty little game that lots of people complain about on the internet. They will manufacture a particular model and sell it to a very wide range of retailers, but give the mattress model a different name for each retailer. They do that to prevent consumers from price shopping. As one poster complained, it's like deciding you want to buy a Camry, but finding out that every dealership calls it something other than a Camry and makes the surface exterior look a bit different.

For example, the "Thistle Meadow" model that Wendy bot is called the "Glen Marie" by the store from which I bot my mattress. It took me a lot of time and effort to find that out.

Also, you will hear a lot of talk about "memory foam" in the mattresses. I've read mixed reviews about, tho it's the latest rage. The foam takes on the shape of your body. Thus, you sink into it somewhat. A lot of people love memory foam mattresses, but many others complain that they are hot because you sink into them, and they give off strange odors.

Another recent rave is latex mattresses, which don't use the spring system that has been prevalent for over a 100 years. The salesman I bot from is crazy about them. He showed me the model he bot, and it did feel great, but it costs $4,000. Of course, he got it for half since he works there.

Good luck.

We have Summerhill & Bischop mattress

from Ortho. I think it's only available here in Southern CA. I really don't know what to look for in a mattress, we just bought a thick one that we're both comfortable sleeping on. I like that bed also but most of our furniture came from Pottery Barn so we did the same for the bedroom. Don't tell my DH, but I prefer modern furniture. =) I like the sleek lines and cleanliness of it.
