OT...PUTTING out the PLUG...DO YOU FEED the outside birds..???

if I did not do a thread on outside birds you would never know the real ME...lol.

my house is surrounded by bird feeders and also by birdhouses. I have pages of pages of documented history on the birds that nest in my yard..and so on

just wander if you feed the birds??
we have been getting a snow storm here the last couple of days..yea the highway is closed again...too..and I noticed today that 10 chickadees are using the side birdhouse to hide in from the cold winds..

in the winter feed your birds a concentration that has more oil for the cold... and a nut base would be great for the woodpeckers..

I am called the bird lady in my neighbourhood.

toss them some old bread ends Gary...even some...

old cereal..
ducks will eat just about anything like that..
I take along some old bread ends and it works great..
they love it

I feed the ducks, they love dry cat food

but there are sooooo many of them that I can't afford to feed them every day.

I have several bird feeders hanging from my clothesline, that way the squirrels dont get as much, I have chickadees, woodpeckers, wrens, grossbeaks, and others I am not sure of.

Hmmm, probably not...

they are pretty much desert birds, they nest in the sahauro's here in Phoenix.

I feed the birds all year too..but the hummingbirds...odd..

I can not get them use my feeders.
I have put them out all the time..
I have about 150 lilies that bloom in my front yard and about that many in my backyard..and they use the lilies all the time instead.
I love to watch the hummingbirds..but guess the real deal is better..lol. so they do not want to use the feeders.
they do when they first come back but as soon as the bleeding hearts are out..NO more..
I can see them up close for ONE week a yaer..

that is ONE bird that I have not seen...wrens are cute though..

I have more then one set of house wrens here in the summertime..
they build a nest in all the boxes and the female chooses the ONE she wants..
once she is in there..I have to go and remove all the dummy nests..
they are chatty..and sing beautiful
but the cactus wren is one that I have not seen yet..might not be in the area for it either..

I always take along bread crumbs when I play golf...

and I feed the cactus wrens. Last week one of them actually jumped onto my leg while I was sitting in the cart and ate the bread crumbs off of my lap!

I don't feed the birds

but we do get nests on our porch every year, and the past few years in a row a snake eats all the babies! We saw it with very distinct lumps in his belly and NO baby birds. I won't kill the snake though because we also have mice and I'd rather have the snake outside than the mice inside.

nice to have them outside your window....what a nice idea...

that was very thoughtful of your husband..
I have a few feeders around the house here..
and go through about the same amount of food as you..
I feed a woodland mix in the winter here since I attract so many different type of birds...
the feed is specially made for the winter time..and then they change it for the summer birds..
I KNOW more about birds then bulldogs..lol only kidding..but the birds are fun

I have some bird of prey silouettes on the windows here in the spring and summer so they do not hit the windows as much..

We don't get snow where I live and only a few frost mornings

in the winter months, but it does get relatively "cold" here and yes, I do have a large bird feeder and keep it filled (except the dogsitter forgets to refill it when I travel). I go through at least one 40# bag of wild bird seed every month (Costco, again!) and the doves and crows have to take what's on the ground because the edges are too narrow, just good for the little birds. happy.gif

Hubby bought this and hung it outside my bedroom window when I was recuperating from surgery few years back...it works much better than the small one I had on the back patio...I see this whenever I enter the room. Only downside is when some silly bird flies smack into the window, with a loud THUNK. happy.gif

I even had a DUCK Show up at my door..

lot of birds here..
way to many of them sometimes..
I feed them in the spring and try to get lots of pics if I can..
I am on the flyway...so all the birding flying south or coming back from the south ..pass over the house so it is really kinda cool..
I live 5 minutes to Lake Huron and on occasion..see a very rare bald eagle.

I had a duck that showed up once..just was on my front deck. it was about this time of the year actually. I thought it was some farmers pet duck. took in the duck, put it in the tub..and called the vet to see if I could trace it somehow..no luck. I then took the duck to a good neighbour who said that it was an immature golden eye. somehow got off the beaten path and read they needed a few hundred feet too take off..and the lake was iced..so took in the poor fella for the night into the house here. he slept in my sons room for the night in a box and I set him free on the river in town the next day where he could take off..

We don't see a lot of birds inthe winter.

Some pigeons and a few crows. Oh, and of course, Canada Geese, but they're over by the lakes. What we do see in the neighborhood are squirrels. Lots and lots of fat squirrels.

Glad to see you feed the birdies.
