O/T Question regarding ELECTRICAL WORK...

I only have one wall outlet in our garage. Thats two sockets I can plug stuff into. I have a full workbench, plus my husbands stuff, plus a fan and a freezer. So what we currently have is the freezer and a heavy extension cord plugged into it. There is a power strip plugged into the extension cord that all my saws, etc are plugged into.

Needless to say, Im paranoid about fires so I keep them all untangled and clean. Its not a mess, but the piggy-backing concerns me.

Does anyone know how much(ballpark, ofcourse)an electrician would charge me to put another wall outlet in my garage? How much am I looking at?

And also, my husband says all the electrician would do is splice it off the power running to the existing wall outlet, which would be just like piggy backing. So whats the point? Is he right, or would it be different than that?

My suggestion? Fly Nicole there!!!

I have a hubby that is a builder and so usually my house is falling apart! I have to do alot of the repairs myself. But I have never seen a lady who can do as much as Nicole can! Holy cow, next time I tear into something I am flying her here to help!!!

you NEED an Electrician

I work in the electrical business and I can tell you that you really need to have an electrician come out.

The freezer needs to be on a circuit all by itself.

If you really have what you say you have plugged into that 1 plug you are severely overloading that circuit.

You will need to have an electrician pull another circuit to the garage.

That way the freezer will be on the one circuit by itself and the rest of the plugs on the other.

An electrician in my neck of the woods makes about $35/hr.

That job should be about 2 to 3 hours depending on how easy it is to get to your electrical panel.

With material you are looking at about $200 to $300.

Hope that helps.

P.S. Use a reputable electrician..... not one that advertises in the paper, most of those guys will look for all the shortcuts and not do it right.

as a do it yourselfer...i can say with confidence

what an electrician is going to do is go into your wall and splice into the wiring that is already running thru your walls...and insert plugs where ever it is you are wanting them...in a way your husband is correct...but by doing it the electricians way the electricity is disbursed evenly...by piggy backing the way you are doing now...you are going to overload the circuit.....my suggestion to you is for you and your husband to go to lowes and they usually have mini classes and plenty of books on "how to" you will be amazed at how easy it actually is....i could tell you but not in a short response here on bdw...but i promise you if you go to lowes or home depot and get a how to book and speek with someone in the electrical dept who is qualified to answer youre questions...you can make this a weekend project!..good luck!!

Re: O/T Question regarding ELECTRICAL WORK...

That one I don't know. We had an electrician upgrade the wiring in this house after we moved in and it cost us about 1K. I always get 3 quotes for things and I ask friends/family if they can recommend someone. They have been the most reliable and the most resonable of all. Perhaps someone at work can recommend someone or does electricial work on the side.
