Only once before have my pipes frozen, and that was more than ten years ago. I remember that no water would come out of the faucet when I turned on either the hot or cold water faucet. Fortunately, it was a short lived freeze outdoors and the faucets worked fine a few hours later.
Today, I was getting read to take a shower. When I turned on the hot water faucet, no water came out. Even tho I wrapped my outdoor pipes a couple of weeks ago, I figured they must have still frozen. But when I turned on the cold water faucet to brush my teeth, the water came out just fine. Does anyone have any idea why that would happen? If anything, I would expect the cold water faucet to freeze before the hot water, not the other way around.
Thanks.

Gary..might want to consider getting a insulated blanket for the
they are not that expensive and get them at all hardware stores
it really cuts down on energy costs as well
they pay for themselves..
and they help in the cold cold temps too
just a thought

I guess the pipes from your hot water heater are in a different location than the cold water. Maybe that is why.

IN my mobile..the hot water went first...
I had a huge mess in there getting the pipes unthawed..
did you try all the hot water taps around your home.
another thing you can do is to leave the cold water run for a bit to get the water pushed through...
and take out some warm water and put it on your pipes outside..
frozen pipes are not a good thing..
we had to take a torch around and find where the pipes were frozen but the hot water ones went first..
usually you might get a trickle..out of the tap
do you have that??
did you also check your hotwater tank??
That I don't know, but I will ask my husband and find out.

I think just the cold is fine...
as long as some water is running..
that is what they said at the mobile..
just a trickle in the cold water tap should be enough
The hot water is running fine now
When I left home around noon today to run errands, the hot water was not working in the bathrooms for the bedrooms, but was working in the kitchen and that part of the house. When I came back home around 5 pm, all of the hot water faucets were running fine. Tonite I will leave a small stream running in the bedrooms' bathrooms.

Thanks. Oh, you're right. I read on the internet that hot water does freeze faster than cold water. Do you know whether I should leave the hot water faucet or the cold water faucet running all night tonite?

You are right, hot water will freeze before cold
I read several articles on the internet that said that. Oh, my hot water is running now.

Its mandatory here...energy conservation includes
an insulated cover for the water heater(s).
Oh Gary, not having water can
suck! Hot water freezes first cause the heat makes the molecules farther apart since they are more active from friction which creates the heat-if I remember correctly-probably not-ha! I agree on leaving the water dripping at each sink and I also open the doors to the cabinet below the sinks to allow the warm air in.

I have been told
wether its true or not that hot water will freeze first. Can you put a lightbulb near the pipe, or let it drip a little once it is thawed? Hair dryer could unthaw it if you can get to the pipe, also you can buy heat tape and only plug it in when the pipe does freeze, I use that for my washing machine. Just dont want to forget it is plugged in, but works great.
The real problem with frozen pipes
When the water expands during a freeze, it can cause the pipes to burst. Then when the pipes thaw, there will be NO water at all, water damage and an expensive plumber bill.
Do everything you can to keep this from happening. Let the fausets run slightly during the freeze. This can help keep them from freezing (but may not work if the freeze is extended or it it's really, really cold.)
If the pipes burst, turn off the water at the main source and call a plumber right away.
