o/t ~ on a personal note... can anyone help me with...

finding a new career path. I've been working in Higher Education w/in Student Affairs for the past 7-8 years and I've been trying to see where else my acquired skills can take me. I'm about to hire a job coach to help me but I thought i'd throw this out on the board in case some of you have some experience (or just curiosity) with resumes/career changes and are willing to take a look at mine and give me some suggestions. Mainly I'm in need of objective people of all walks of life to look at my experience and give me their thoughts on what it looks like I could be good at because I'm stuck in a rut!

I won't post my resume here, but if you're interested let me know and I'll email it to you... THANKS!!!

~cristina~

Wish I could help....

I talk about changing careers all the time. But I cannot figure out what to do with myself either. Anything I would like to do will not allow me to pay my mortgage...LOL.

Good luck on your quest and let us know what you decide.

Sue

I hear ya too!

They say follow your passion and that will lead you to what you need to do. Sometimes easier said than done though, I haven't figured it out for myself yet either. Let us know how you decide and what you decide when you decide

Well !!!!!!!!! I hear you loud and clear !!!!!!!!

I'm basically in the same situation, although I've worked for the same company for 26 yrs, have 5 weeks of vacation and only 6 more to actually retire. But I'm young so I'll still need to work 10+ yrs. I HATE work everyday. I have also just had this conversation with my better half. I'm seriouslly thinking about going to school, unfortunately I never went to college (except for a few accounting credits) and started work with my company when I was 17. I would need probably 4 yrs of school to do another career. What I really love to do I can't make enough money to live off of.

Christina I hope you find your direction, as I'm also searching for mine and middle aged now. Pass on any tips when you find them

Christina...

Email me your resume. I'd be glad to look at it and offer ideas. May-be we'd get you to move out here to Las Vegas, our job market is booming.

The only advice I can give is

DON'T GO INTO THE LEGAL FIELD!!! It's horrible, none of the clients are ever happy, and it is boring routine stuff. My niece was going to try and get a law degree. I told her I would give her $500 for a graduation gift if she didn't. If she did decide to go into law I was going to give her $100 and the address to the nearest AA meeting.

How about the local government?

After some different jobs after graduating in law, I finally found my place in working: at a local government I'm doing all kind of work concerning housing and monuments.

It is fun, it is interesting, I see a lot of people, and it pays well (or at least better than I was used to).

that is the story of my life

I am going back to school to study animal science. I spent WAY too long doing things that I didn't like for money.
My best advice is to only do what you want to do. If you stick yourself in a daily grind for the money, you will be miserable, ruin your life, ruin everyone around yous' life, and die young from stress and cancer.

Don't let anyone tell you that you can't have a dream and do what YOU want and still make a living. It can be done. You just need to be patient, resourceful, and have a positive attitude.

Kris

I wish I could help you...

but my computer is down at home and the only time I can get on here is M-F and my work does not let others email me here b/c they always reject them as SPAM! I was in a rut. I am a f/t paralegal and last July started my own petsitting service. So I am quite busy. I go to school in NY on Saturdays for dog grooming so I can incorporate that in my biz... I am bored doing this paralegal thing. It is not challenging anymore to me.. and my little monster, Otis, my bully, was my inspiration in starting my biz b/c I did not want to put him in a kennel....this is what I am doing w/ my life right now. It is such a change from this legal work... but rewarding to me...plus I love animals!!! Good luck...
