O/T Oldies but Goodies: Poem ideas for kids to give Dad on Father's Day

Sometimes it's fun for children to illustrate a poem as a gift for Father's Day. My niece asked me for some poem suggestions from when my guys were little. I thought I'd share them with you:

"When Daddy Fell Into the Pond" The site has illustrations drawn by second graders. (Scroll down for them all.)

Link has illustrated poem "I Wish My Father Wouldn't Try To Fix Things Anymore". You have to keep clicking "next" at the top to get the whole thing. I didn't think the words were easy to read though, so below is the complete poem.

"I Wish My Father Wouldn't Try To Fix Things Anymore" by Jack Prelutsky

My father's listed everything he's planning to repair,
I hope he won't attempt it, for the talent isn't there,
he tinkered with the toaster when the toaster wouldn't pop,
now we keep it disconnected, but we cannot make it stop.

He fiddled with the blender, and he took the clock apart,
the clock is running backward, and the blender will not start,
every windowpane he's puttied now admits the slightest breeze,
and he's half destroyed the furnace, if we're lucky, we won't freeze.

The TV set was working, yet he thought he'd poke around,
now the picture's out of focus, and there isn't any sound,
there's a faucet in the basement that had dripped one drop all year,
since he fixed it, we can't find it without wearing scuba gear.

I wish my father wouldn't try to fix things anymore,
for everything he's mended is more broken than before,
if my father finally fixes every item on his list,
we'll be living in the garden, for our house will not exist.

"I Wish I Could Meet the Man That Knows" by John Ciardi

I wish the man that knows
Who put the fly on my daddy's nose
When my daddy was taking a nap today.
I tried to slap that fly away
So Daddy could sleep. But just as my
Came down to slap him, the fly jumped AND

I hit with a bang – where do you suppose? –
SMACK ON THE END OF DADDY'S NOSE!
"Ow!" cried Daddy, and up he jumped.
He jumped so hard that he THUMP- BUMPED
His head on the wall.
Well, I tried to say,
"See, Daddy, I slapped the fly away."
And I should think he would have thanked me.
But what do you think he did? He SPANKED me!

"I was just trying to help!" I said.
But Daddy was looking very red.
"For trying to help, I have to thank you.
But for that smack on the nose, I'll spank You!"
And up in the air went his great big hand
As he said, "I hope you understand
It's my nose I'm spanking for, not the fly.
For the fly I thank you."
And that is why
I wish I could meet the man that knows
Who put the fly on my daddy's nose.
For when I find him, I want to thank him.
And as I do, I want to spank him.

"When Daddy Carves the Turkey" by Jack Prelutsky

When Daddy carves the turkey,
It is really quite a sight,
I know he tries his hardest,
But he never does it right.

He makes a fancy show of it,
Before he starts to carve,
And stabs in all directions,
While we're certain that we'll starve.

He seems to take forever,
As we sit and shake our heads,
By the time he's finished slicing,
He's reduced the birds to shreds.

He yells as loud as thunder,
Just before he's finally through
For when Daddy carves the turkey,
Daddy carves his finger too!

correction

I left out the word "hand" when I posted this poem above. Here it is:

"I Wish I Could Meet the Man That Knows"

John Ciardi

I wish I could meet the man that knows

Who put the fly on my daddy's nose

When my daddy was taking a nap today.

I tried to slap that fly away

So Daddy could sleep. But just as my hand

Came down to slap him, the fly jumped AND

I hit with a bang – where do you suppose? –

SMACK ON THE END OF DADDY'S

NOSE!

"Ow!" cried Daddy, and up he jumped.

He jumped so hard that he THUMP-

BUMPED

His head on the wall.

Well, I tried to say,

"See, Daddy, I slapped the fly away."

And I should think he would have thanked me.

But what do you think he did? He

SPANKED me!

"I was just trying to help!" I said.

But Daddy was looking very red.

"For trying to help, I have to thank you.

But for that smack on the nose, I'll spank

You!"

At the same time I extend my sympathies to those

who have lost their dad. This is a difficult holiday to go through. My thoughts keep going to those who have just their memories.
