OT: Look at the new addition to my equine family...

Mustang Cruz was lonely and I got this little fella for a buddy. But he's also broke to ride! His name is Chili. He was born to a BLM wild adopted donkey "jenny", so his parents are wild stock decended from abandoned prospector donkeys and shephard's livestock guardians.

Wow, that is very interesting, what do they fight with?

their hooves? I could see a donkey taking out a coyote but I am surprised one could take out a cougar or even a wolf.

Amy..find that soo amazing...

I really want you to do a thread on your life sometime..
very very interesting person. I would love it..

I would never have believed that a donkey would protect anything..
they do not look to be the brighest
sure are cute though
this is the first real pic of a donkey that I have seen..other then net photos
never ever seen a real donkey in real life anywhere..not even the zoo..lol

Hey...living with a Bulldog should have acquainted you with

STUBBORN! happy.gif

DSimas's picture

I haven't tried that

Once I can get him to trust me enough to touch or halter him, he loves to be petted all over. He's just a bit leary still and the trust needs to come. Donkeys are very cautious, which is why they're such good guardians.

He is my shadow though. They also like to follow and it's part of him learning if I'm trustworthy. He's so quiet. If I face him and reach out, he'll be standoffish, but I turn and leave and he'll follow. happy.gif

Teeth!

They will charge, kick, bite and shake it like a dog.

The wild donkeys that Chili's parents' stock decended from are abandoned prospector's companions and sheepherder's guardians. The basque ran sheep all over the west in the 1800's with a sheepwagon and often used donkeys for protection on open range. happy.gif

Here's a webpage

Are they hard to take care of? I'll find out! I've been told that they are very hearty, but so intellegent that it can be misinterpreted as stubborn. But they are all about self-preservation and if they think something is dangerous, there's no arguing with them, that's intellegence. So, you have to outthink them and make them think it's their idea. Ha!

I will be buying a DVD about donkey training, they really are not like horses.

Hi Gary. In these parts lots of the ranchcers with cattle or hor

They will go right after a coyote if one tries to get to close. Also, they have been known to fight off cougars. I want them to protect my horses from dog packs and coyotes, as well as any possibly big cats roaming across our ground again. I see the big ranchers have a small herd of donkeys, maybe 10 or so. The smaller herd livestock owners have a couple or three donkeys. They work together to ward off the predators.

I love that last photo of him; donkeys guard livestock??

I didn't know that. What kind of predators do they ward away?

Those are the reasons I want to get a few.

Everyone around here has a small group or a couple of donkeys to protect their livestock. It is cute to see them out with a big herd of cows....these little furry furies will run off anything that comes along and tries to hurt one of those cows! I will have them to keep watch over my horses to keep the coyotes away, especially if I have foals next year. I have to have protection out there for that.

Amy and Sophia

Love him

OK I have a confession. I love donkeys! Don't ask me why. I just think they are beautiful. Wish I could have one. Thanks for posting. Are they fun/easy to take care of?

how old is he??

he looks really young..
such a darn cute face too..

DSimas's picture

Yep!

Except he's not a jack any more, he's gelded. So he's just an ass. wink.gif

Also called donkeys or burros. I call him a foghorn...I'll have to record his voice...

BLM is Bureau of Land Management

When you adopt a wild mustang it is throught the BLM Wild Mustang and Burro Act. These little guys run wild like the mustangs and are adopted out to manage the populations.

I am becoming a longears fan!

My mule/donkey friends say that everyone should have one. He hardly eats anything, is solid and not flighty like a horse, and cute as a button. He will attack a coyote or a cougar, he's always on the lookout. They say that horses respect you (or not), but a donkey LOVES you. They bond deeply and follow you around like a puppy dog. I will be posting riding video soon!

And you can ride him? Congrats! Love his name!!!

TamsenNJosie Louise's picture

p,s, you will be surprised

at how he will "study" your gently blowing in his nose. he will make his own noise that indicate he is analyzing your "communicaiton." Just amazing. Keep me posted.

TamsenNJosie Louise's picture

It's an old Indian trick

breathing into their nostrils lets them know it is you and they can also "read" your vibe. it builds a trust between the horse/jack that will never be broken. Recogniiton and saftey and confort, they read a lot from just something so simple. when you can try it you may be surprised at how quick he will respond in other areas as he will be at ease. Tamsen
