O/T: "15 Overpriced Things We Hate To Buy"

This article notes, among other things, that movie theaters mark up popcorn by as much as 1,275%. Grrrrrr.

Some of the new HDTVs that are now out have built-in Netflix

thus you will not even have to order DVDs thru the mail, tho I have no idea how long it takes to stream a movie to your TV.

Amy, I'm with you on both things

We've brought our own snacks but I would not buy a ticket in another price.

We rarely go because of that...

We have a Bluray & wonderful sound system at home & Netflix. We microwave as much popcorn as we want! happy.gif

Last time we went to a theatre, we said we could have gone to pretty good restaurant for what it cost us for Cokes & popcorn. That's nutz!

I don't think I could do that...not be honest about who is who:-

I pay for the tickets...but I do what Wendy does and take my own snacks. I don't think there is anything wrong with bringing your own snack stuff in, but I would have to draw the line at not being honest about WHO is coming in with me.

When we go to movies.....

We go to a show before noon, it is only $5!! Although we do buy popcorn and pop so we end up paying more to eat than to see the movie!! There is even one theatre by my house, it is "fancy" and the also serve alcohol and real food, but it is $22 per ticket!!!!!!!!!

And noone ever checks your tickets?

and comments about adults using childrens tickets?

The theaters are going to put themselves out of business if they

until just a year or so ago, you could save a lot of money by going to a movie in the afternoon instead of at night. Tickets were almost 50% cheaper for the matinees. Then I started to notice that the movie theater parking lots are practically full on weekend afternoons. The theaters finally caught on too, and now the matinee tickets are $7.50 instead of $4.00.

And like you say, the concession prices are just absurd. A small soft drink and a small popcorn are now $10. Thus, going to a matinee now costs $17.50 per person miminum, or $35 for a couple. That is crazy. So I too now stop at a 7-11 if I want goodies. The only thing I buy at the theater is a soft drink. The theaters will probably catch on that too and then raise the price of a small soft drink to $20. The greed is just ridiculous.

I'm with you Wendy I do the same and even one better.....what

we do is buy the tickets online or at the machine in the theatre. We will buy one adult and one child or senior. Usually those tickets are $2-3 cheaper.

So, if I go with my husband and 2 daughters (over the age of 18) we will buy one senior and 3 children tickets.

Hey, every little bit helps!

I cheat...

I refuse to pay $4 for a bottle of cheap water at the movie theater. I stop at the gas station or grocery store before going to the movies and stuff my purse with cold Water, Sprite or Root Beer bottles. Oh, and I pop popcorn at home and put it in sandwich bags for the kids. lol Its better for them anyway. Jolly Time Blast 'O' Butter is still not as greasy and nasty as theater popcorn. For what they charge for movie tickets these days in addition to refreshments, I just flat refuse to pay $75 for us to go to the movies. I have a rather large "MOVIES PURSE" for when we go to the movies!
