Now I need some serious help

Bobo is doing some snapping/biting. It is happening occasionally when someone tries to move him from someplace he wants to be. Because I haven't had him very long, I don't know if it's the prednisone or if he is suddenly thinking he's the boss. Most of the time I can move him no problem, it happens every once in awhile and he has a HARD bite. I have started NILF deal with him and other than that I am not sure what to do. I suppose I should not let him up on the couch at all, that's where it has happened, and once when he was in Najee's crate and Andrew went in to pull him out cause he wouldn't get out when he called him. I would really appreciate some help, thanks! My Akita, who died of VKH, was on very large doses of steriods and it definitely changed his personality.

Thanks so much!

I am not giving up, no way! My confusion is, as someone said, I am not sure if this is his temperament because he is feeling better or if it is the pred. He is totally sweet 99% of the time, even when I do move him. I started using treats to get him off the couch. One of the problems is, it is so incredibly cold here that none of the dogs want to go out and I have to force them to go out numerous times a day. If I don't, they will pee and poop in the house. Last night the windchill was -30something so they don't want to stay out long enough. By the time they are done sniffing for a place to go they are starting to freeze. I put jackets on them and everything. This morning Bobo would not fall for the treat to go outside so I put the leash on him and took him out. I go home at lunch everyday and have to do the same thing. The cold is wearing for everyone, dogs and people both. I really appreciate the suggestions and will start looking into some options. I think the 1/2 dose of pred is just maintaining him right now, he is a little pink, like it's not fully coming to fruition because of the pred. I am afraid to take him off it without another plan in place.

He has a comfy bed on the livingroom floor and up in my bedroom. :0)

And.......we are all under-exersized! We are used to walking 45 minutes or an hour after work and 1/2 hour at lunch and it is just too cold. I am playing with them in the house and Saturday I took them to Petco for something to do! Crazy weather!

Absolutely...you know what we have been through physically

and emotionally with Hooch, Lynn. Patience is key.

luvwinnie's picture

Yes, but it is tailored just to Hooch based on his

blood work and symptoms to try to balance his immune system. Feel free to email me. eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%6d%6f%63%65%6a%6f%40%63%66%61%2e%63%6f%6d%22%3e%6d%6f%63%65%6a%6f%40%63%66%61%2e%63%6f%6d%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b'))

a couple of things.......

first he has been sick since you have had him.....he is now getting better....this may be his temperment....it is just something you may need to think about.....some dogs that seem fine when their sick have issues when their feeling better...this is just from my experience dealing with rescue dogs.....
pred can have a temperment issue....but i find that short term....and how long have you been on it.... vets use pred as a band aid treatment ....and if your aving issues on pred i cant see how your vet would give you alpocia to use.....alpocia supresses the t4 cells...
your dog has bad allergies go to a bland diet hamburger or chicken boiled with brown rice...for 60 days....alot less expensive than the vet....
but be a little prepared as he feels better he may be a grumpy dog.....

Don't cry

It took 2 years for him to get this bad, so recovery is going to take a long time. I've had plenty of dogs come into my home with all kinds of issues. I have found that with a good quality food, exercise, fresh air and lots of loving and letting their bodies work at healing itself, they recover slowly but surely.

Be patient and thanks for taking him and loving him.

Bobo

has so many issues and I have a feeling they are chronic. It's so overwhelming to try to figure out what to do. Sometimes I could just cry about it.

Rockt did this when h was on pred

it changed him alot, I finally had to go back to the vet and get him taken off of all his meds,it was also when I first got him, speak to your vet about alternative meds, we took Rocky off of the heavy drugs and he takes meticam now for his feet, and no reactions

do you have a particular "program" you followed?

Yikes!

That is good to know. Someone's dog on here is taking it but I can't remember who? It would be great to have an update.

He did have the panel

and his thyroid is fine, I wondered about that too.

luvwinnie's picture

Atopica did nothing for Hooch and for our first bulldog it

made her White blood cell count go to ZERO, so just be aware of the risks. If you can find a good holistic vet and you are open to it, it would be a great alternative.

luvwinnie's picture

I would definitely get a thyroid test (Full panel) to start...

that is a common culprit for moodiness. Hooch was VERY sensitive...he was on Temaril P which is a low dose.

Some dogs do get grumpy on Prednisone

but I wouldn't assume that its the cause of the issues that you are having.

Good for you for starting him on the NILF. I would discontinue any pushing/shoving/pulling but instead, when you want him to move - try luring him with a treat and keep yourself calm/relaxed/upbeat, I think you will find he will become more responsive and certainly much happier to comply.

He is on it

because when I adopted him he had spent the 1st two years of his life in a garage. He had double ear infections, mange, allergies, exploded toe cysts, hernia, etc. My vet put him on Cephalexin and Pred to basically just get rid of a lot of it because he was so uncomfortable and he is sooo much better and is now down to only 1/2 dose of Pred each day, which is I think, 10mg? It's at home and I'm at work. I think I am going to try Atopica and am looking into holistic options. He was very, very sick and has made great progress and is so sweet. That's why I am thinking it might be from the pred but I have only had him for a couple of months.

luvwinnie's picture

I have dealt with aggression from prednisone...we had to

take Hooch off. We went to a holistic vet who has help tremendously. He was on for allergies. Why is he on pred?

Why is he on the prednisone?
