Nora's rescue story :( with pics.

Me: Hi. Im calling about the Bulldog you have listed on the internetis she still available?
Noras owner: Yes she is.
Me: May I come right now? (It was 10 pm, 3 days before Christmas)
Noras owner: Yes. My address is.
Thats all it took to welcome poor little Nora into rescue. Her owner didnt ask if I had any experience with the breed or where she would be living, matter-of-fact, if I hadnt offered him my first name so that he would hold her for me until I got there, he wouldnt even know that!
After meeting with Mommie Neely and finding Noras home, we got out of the car and spoke to her owner. He told us that he was getting rid of her because he was moving to a waterfront home. Bulldogs cant swim so I dont want anything to happen to her. Thats a lame excuse we thought. Anyway, he walks into his home and comes back out carrying Nora. He never introduces us to her or anything. He simply walked to the back of my car and plopped her in the back (I have a wagon). That was it. He didn't give us food, leash, or anything. She didn't even have a collar on her. At this point we didn't even see (or know) if the poor girl could walk. Of course we felt bad and took her, even thou we technically shouldn't have. Have you seen that snout??
When Mommie Neely questioned him about Noras eyes, his response was, "All bulldog eyes are like this. That's just the way they are. She doesn't have anything wrong with them." Sure., all bulldogs have red, weepy, obviously painful eyes.
Before we left, I asked for her vet records. He said that they are packed in a box. The obvious next question being, what is the name of your vet? He doesnt know this either. He tells me to call him the next day and hell get that info from his wife. He never answered his phone again.
At first, we were extremely hesitant about taking Nora into our rescue. With such a shortage of space already and lack of funds, we took her in and decided to keep her after being won over by her personality and sweet, gentle spirit. She deserves the very best treatment and a wonderful, loving, caring home like any other dog that has been discarded by undeserving owners.
Nora was scheduled for her spay and entropion eye surgery on Wednesday 12/30/2009. During this visit she was to be fully vaccinated, heartworm and blood tested, and basically just start from scratch since we never did get those vet records. Unfortunately, when the vet did her pre-surgical blood work and all the standard testing we do on new intake bullies, it was discovered she is HEARTWORM POSITIVE!!!! Not only will the surgeries be delayed for an indefinite period of time, but Nora will now have to suffer through painful heartworm injections in an attempt to save her life. The goal is to kill the worms while preserving her life. The treatments are not only painful, but are risky and can take a very severe toll on the dog. She will be on activity restriction/crate confinement for the next 12-16 weeks until her treatments are complete and she has recovered enough to undergo her spay and eye surgeries.
