My Nigel has been limping for quite some time now. He was put on rimadyl? for pain. But still the limping. He will be 2 on July 5 and weighs 60lbs. I had xrays done by Nigels regular vet (not a bulldog specialist but great none the less). He sent them to an orthopedic surgeon who says luxating patella. I live in Sarasota, FL and would like to see if any of you would recommend a specific vet or orthopedic surgeon in my vicinity? I will get a second opinion before doing anything. The price I was giving would be around $1500. Sound right? Thanks so much.
Thanks Malinda...
Sorry to hear Flash has such problems with the knees. If you don't mind, may I ask how it all began. My Nigel starting favoring his rear right leg about 6 months ago. His vet put him on rimadyl which seemed to help but things are just getting worse. I try to keep him from further injuring it but he is just so active. I have heard quite a bit about using a crate for a couple of weeks to see if that helps but Nigel has never been in a crate. I just don't know how to make him rest for that amount of time as he goes all day long and will only rest once I am in bed.
Crazy bulldogs. Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated.
Thanks for the referral..
I will definately check into this. I am waiting to see if I can get the set of xrays from the orthopedic surgeon. So glad that you had success with your bully's hips. I hope all goes as well for Nigel.
Again..thank you..
I had an estimate of ...
1400.00 per knee from an orthopedic surgeon in Cincinnati. Flash has extensive knee problems. I let his regular vet (who was referred to me by the bully assoc.) do the surgery on his right knee about three weeks ago and he's just starting to use it more now and she only charged me 300.00 but she is confident that it will work and he should be using it very well within the next month. She said she had performed this surgery on these dogs numerous times. She said she isn't board certified as a surgeon so she doesn't have to charge the big prices. I guess we'll see. Good luck with your boy, it will take time and he will also need help walking after the surgery. If I can help let me know, Malinda
BULLDOG SURGEON
I LIVE IN BROOKSVILLE IN HERNANDO COUNTY FLORIDA; OUR REGULAR VET (DR COOPER AT ANIMAL CARE CENTER OF WEEKI WACHEE) AND HIS PARTNER, DR KERN, SPECIALIZE IN BULLDOGS. DR COOPER WORKED WITH DR GORDON, ANOTHER BULLDOG VET IN THE AREA, BEFORE STARTING HIS OWN PRACTISE. DR KERN PERFORMS SURGERIES AT ANIMAL CARE CENTER; HE IS AN ABSOLUTELY MASTERFUL SURGEON. HE PERFORMED SURGERY ON MY MIKEY TO CORRECT HIP DYSPLASIA TWO AND A HALF YEARS AGO, AND YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT TELL ANYTHING WAS DONE TO HIM. (HE CAN LEAP TALL BUILDINGS IN A SINGLE BOUND!) DR. KERNS IS A CARING, GIFTED VETERINARIAN AND SURGEON. I WOULD RECOMMEND BOTH DR COOPER AND DR KERN FOR THE SECOND OPINION YOU WANT AND DR KERN IF SURGERY MUST BE PERFORMED. THE PHONE NUMBER AT ANIMAL CARE CENTER IS 352/596-2100. MENTION MIKEY AND MARLEEN, THEY WILL KNOW WHO WE ARE. (ACTUALLY, THEY WILL KNOW MIKEY BEFORE THEY THINK OF WHO I AM; THEY LOVE HIM!)
