Need some puppy advice (Not for me!)

My co-worker adopted an adorable 9 wk old JRT/doxie mix this past weekend. Her name is Anna. She is having trouble with something I have no experience with because when we got Winnie 11 years ago I lived in an apt. and could not risk her crying at night so I just let her sleep in bed with me.
Anna barked in her crate for THREE hours last night. I believe the crate is on the first floor and they sleep on the second. I know some people put the crate in their rooms? Can that help?
They need tips, please. She is not alone often during the day. They have a good schedule for a puppy as her husband often works nights and weekends. Thanks! I know you guys will have some great advice.

Hmmm....

Haven't had a puppy in 15 years! But at the time, we had his crate right next to our bed. Then he quickly joined us in the bed happy.gif

Crate nearby and cover it with a sheet

Makes it more cavelike and they feel secure in there. I have a black sheet just covering the top and about 4" covering the sides.

Probably won't be popular...

But I put Brutus in a play pen next to my bed. He HATED the crate - I guess it was something about the top, but he slept quietly in the play pen(just a regular one for babies) next to my bed for months.

i grew up with jrt's

i was 10 when we brought Quentin home and we tried everything and he barked and wined just to let us out...the first week was aweful. Finally we put him downstairs and let him work through it. Having him in eyesight of us in our rooms sleeping seemed to make things worse for Quentin. On the other hand Stuart that my parents got my freshmen year of college was fine in his crate in the hallway upstairs but for him they got one of the plastic carrier crates and he loved that thing. Each dog is different but Quentin was more typical terrier and we just had to be consistent and let him learn the crate is where you sleep. He would go into his crate to sleep on his own as he grew up.

good luck happy.gif

going through the same thing right now

I have a 10 week old American Bulldog. She cried and barked for the first couple of nights and we moved the crate next to the bed. Also I tried to make her crate a happy place by feeding her in there and giving her a cong with peanut butter when I take her to the crate. Also I try to keep her really active from 5 pm until bed time which is 9 pm at my house so she is really tired and then I put her in there with her cong and she chews on it and goes to sleep. Now she sleeps from 9 pm to 4-5 am.

I always had the crate near me at night time..

if the crate is in the same room...they settle faster at night for sure.
put the crate beside her bed...is even better
the other thing to do is to put a piece of her clothes in the crate with the puppy. I did that with all my dogs..some old shirt that I had..that had my scent on it and it helped too.. a small clock works good too.

My sister's pug was a monster!

She would wail and thrash like there was a lion in there with her. It would last at least 1/2 every night. We'd wake up and the crate (mind you it was a small travel one) would be clear across the dining room. She was MAD that we would put her in there like a dog!

Thanks! Wonder if breed differences come into play here also.

This one seems to be all TERRIER...scratches at her crate like she is digging, chews at it and even GOT OUT the first night!

I slept with the crate near me

At least for about a month. When she would cry, I would put my hand in between the bars to comfort her. Eventually, she got the message that we weren't far away and we moved her to the room next door. Worked like a charm.

a friend of mine does that

and she has had multiple puppies at the same time. It worked for her.

Re: Need some puppy advice (Not for me!)

I have always kept the crate in my bedroom. Years ago, when I brought my lab/shepard mix puppy Goose home, he howled and yelped so loud I actually put my bathrobe at the end of the bed, I was sure a neighbor would call the police. It usually only takes a couple of nights before they get it. If you have to let him out to go potty, just take him out with no fuss at all and bring him back in without any fuss either.
