Yikes, Sheldon weighed in at the vet yesterday at 62 lbs. He was 55 at his annual checkup in April. The vet thinks he is over weight and recommended he should loose 4 or 5 lbs. It has been my experience that the vets like to keep bullies on the lean side, but the breeders like them to be a litte beefey. Is this true? I personally, don't think Shelley looks fat and had been told he looked a little lean at 55. Wish I had a picture of him at 62, I'll have to take one and post it. Do you think 5 lbs. really makes a difference in the overall health of a bully? Thanks.

Molly is only 6 months old and weighs 42 LBS last week, cant ima
that vet would tell me .. lol
Fat boy??...
If you can see the dog's hips from above, he's not fat. If you can't....... : (
good luck

Maybe he just grew?
The vet didn't suggest any particular diet. He likes the food we are feeding, Solid Gold. Said maybe we should reduce it from 1 1/2 cups pers serving to 1 1/4. I know what the culprit is though...those darn treats!!! He gets an aweful lot of them! Anyhow, I don't think he looks fat. Our old vet made me a bet, that Sheldon would weigh about 70 lbs., once he was full grown. He is 16 months now at 62 lbs. I wish I had a current pic to post. Thanks.
Joanna
Lean
I've always heard that lean is far preferable. Did the vet suggest a particular diet?
My little girl
she is almost 3 nw and weighs 42-45 lbs. but doesn't look to thin .
keep him lean
it is much healthier for him in the long run. 7lbs in 3 months is an awful lot to gain.

Picture at 55 lbs.
Do you think he looks a little lean, here? I'll post a pic of him at 62 soon.

I do not think so but it depends on the build I would guess
Winston fluctuatiosn between 60-62 pounds and he is very thin looking. Although his vet said to try and keep excess weight off of him because it would help with where he had surgery for his luxiating patella.

Quigly weighs 72 lbs. (pic)
That's what he weighed when he came and my vet didn't say anything bad. Quigly doesn't LOOK fat, he is VERY broad though. He is 5 1/2 and has a birthday in August. I think the pic at 55 looks great, but I'm no expert.
What a handsome fella!
Thanks for your message.

Such a cutie!!
Our old vet said he though Sheldon would be about 70 lbs. when he is fully grown. He is 16 months now and 62 lbs. I'll have to post a pic of him at 62lbs just as soon as I get some film developed. Thanks for your imput.

with Pic
Rocko is pretty thin and he is 58 lbs and just turned 9 months. The breeder said he will probably be near 75lbs when he is older and slows down.

Here is his pic from last week.
Henry weighs 70 pounds.... (pic of course...lol)
He is just now a year old. My vet told me that animals are just like humans. Some ae genetically predetermined to be big or small. Henry is not fat at all. He isnt a skinny boy either. He is just a big bully. Our vet said to watch his weight but right now he is a GREAT looking (weight, etc.), perfectly healthy Bulldog.

Some bullies are smaller and weigh less than others. Some are dead on what the standard calls for. Some are larger. I dont think he looks fat at 55, but in my opinion, I think he could use some beefing up in that pic. He does look liek he might be a little on the lean side to me. I am by no means an expert or even a breeder. I just have seen a lot of bullies here on this site and am comparing his pic to ones Ive seen. I bet he looks perfect at 62!
Like I said, HeMan weighs 70 and he isnt considered fat at all by our vet.
I dunno know????
Can you e-mail me with the breeder info, we have been interviewing breeders in search of a brother for Sheldon. Anyhow, breeders have told me that it is good to keep them pudgy while they are still growing, that you can always take the weight off later. I think we might of stunted Sheldon's development when he was a baby, apparently we were not feeding him enough based on what this particular breeder told me. Sheldon does get a lot of excercise. I have gotten a lot of "my he's gotten big" comments lately, but no one thinks he looks fat, except for the vet. I kind of like him a little beefer, but wouldn't want to put his health in jeporady. How much of difference does 5 lbs really make? How is Leeloo, today?
I agree on the vet vs. breeder comment...
I met a very well-known breeder the other day (not from this board) who told me to keep Leeloo a few pounds overweight from whatever the vet told me... LOL! I'm not sure who is right though, I guess you have to go by what he eats and how much exercise he gets and decide if his particular weight is normal or if he needs to drop a few pounds.

Norb is lean...but non bullie people think he's fat...
he averages 62 - 63 lbs. we do walk him 2 miles several times a week. Hopefully this will give him those extra yrs and I'll have him around alot longer.
there was a study...
done that showed that dogs kept lean throughout their lives would live 15% longer then dogs that were overweight. it came down to 2 extra years!!
and forget when people say he looks skinny. you can just tell them that you are sorry their dog is so fat.
so, keep him lean
liz
Agree...
lean is better in the long run for health reasons.
I think he looks good there...
n/m..
Vets...
Vets like to keep them lean b/c it is healthier for them. But depending on the build of your bully, it might be okay. Our Otis ranges between 50-52 lbs. He is going to be 2 in September and he is all muscle! He looks good and I usually can tell if he looks like he has put on some weight and then I just limit snacks every now and then... To be honest, I love when they are chubby! But the health issue is not for me to decide on...My husband says I am a Chubby Chaser...HEHEHE
Solid Gold
Rocky is also on Solid Gold - but the Holistique Blendz formula (which is also a lean food). We love it! Maybe split the difference and shoot for 58 pounds?
