Murphy gave me a scare....again! I need advice, please.

Well, if he's not electrocuting himself he's catching his paw in something...and if he's not doing either of those he goes back to the old faithful "choking" method.

Today when I gave Murphy his morning feeding, he decided it would be best to eat the entire bowl of food in one gulp with out even chewing. In dog world, this may sound like a good idea, but in reality it's not.

I started to hear him making "plegmy/mucousy" sounds and I almost didn't think anything of it because his choke routine is a bit quieter than that. So I go to peep in on him and his sides are all caved in and he's giving me the "mom will you please save my life again" look.

Not being too excited about performing doggie heimlich coupled with the gag and vomit maneuvers, but still just as scared as if it was the first time, I began my life saving technique with the idea that this time it may not work as easier as the last.

After about 3 large handfulls of un-chewed doggie kibble mixed with mucus spews forth on my freshly vacuumed carpet, Murphy decided to breathe normal and go back in the kitchen for some more grub!

It seems like this time he was gagging on his plegmn more than just choking on a lodged piece of kibble. Does anyone know why he would be all congested like this? Is it a sign of an elongated soft pallet or maybe just allergies?

If you all have any advice, please let me know.

Murphy sends everyone big bulldog slobbers, but he has promised that he's cleaned out the vomit beforehand. Such a gentleman!

Emily & Chokester....I mean Moophster!

Murphy!

Don't scare me like that, or your momma!! Eat slowly from now on. Just pretend you are nibbling on your Clovis.

TRY water

Try putting water over the bowl of food as if it is a bowl of breakfast cereal. I do not soak it first. This works on all my dogs that gulp their food. This works so well that sometimes the dog doesn't want to try it. But they will if this is all you offer. The water slows down their eagerness to eat it fast. Make it just like you were eating dry breakfast cereal for yourself with milk.

The rock thing?

What's that?

Em..BIG rock>>BiG...chuckle

Murph no rock gulping ...I mean it handsome...ce

it really works..but make sure it's a big enough one that

the bully won't swallow it,just put it in the middle of the bowl and make them work for the food..most gulpers are food lovers and they will work for ever last nibble......smile...ce

ROCKS

That's the first time I've heard about rocks. I sounds like a good solutions to food gulpers.

Boy you have your hands full with Murphy

Maybe just give him a little at a time. I don't know why he would be choking on his kibble.

LOL... you crack me up! Also try just serving him small amounts

like 2 spoon-fulls every few minutes. That's what works for Leeloo. Silly bullies!

Thanks Emily

It is so terrifying. Sheldon choked on a doggie bagel last week. The thing must of been so hard, cause I saw him trying to chew it and it just wouldn't break. He swallowed the darn thing whole but thankfully threw it up after a good 30 seconds of sheer terror on my part. Sheldon used to gulp his food down real fast, but is much better now. At the time, the vet recommended that we soak his food in water to soften it. I have heard a lot of people suggest the rock thing. Good luck.

so hand feeding is the alternative?

LOL! He just wants to be spoiled like all the other bullydogs!

I can just hear him now..."Mom, I can't eat like that...out of a dog bowl. A dog bowl, aren't those for, ehmmm....dogs!? I need to be hand fed or I'll just choke, Mom! And I'd prefer some steak and jif...dog kibble. Hmphf, that sounds like it's for dogs too!"

I think I'll try to rock in his dish, but don't be surprised if I make a post about a naughty dog that ate a rock!

Emily

Poor Murphy...

I have no idea about alergies or the soft palate (sorry). the only thing I can suggest is the you wet his food a little bit and smooch it so that he can't choke on it so easily. Or feed him one kibble at a time, so that he learns to take his time. Hope this makes sense. Good luck!

Re: Murphy gave me a scare....again! I need advice, please.

You need to slow down his eating somehow. That is why I started hand feeding Theo, it worked but I am still hand feeding and guess I always will. LOL

Em....the globber may have just been his build up from

chumping down too fast....and then trying to hack it back...
...a elongated palate would have some other symtoms I suspect....
Symptoms:
open mouth breathing
noisy breathing
excessive snoring
choking and gagging
spitting up phlegm
cyanosis (blue-tinged color) eyes
exercise intolerance
gurgling, raspy loud sounds with little exsertion of energy.

i'm not sure about the alergies...

Murph...be have....
slow down...and Em...have your tried putting a large rock in the middle of his food dish?
it slows them down...because they have to eat around it..
also I find for my gulpers I have 3....(and yes they have rocks in their bowls..some folks use tennis balls two..but I found that meant play time, lets toss the food covered ball all aroud...)
any way I founfd it's harder for them to gulp small bits food then larger chunks....
hope some of this helps..mug hugs Murph ..and behave!ce

sound like what moop does...

I don't know much about what I'm doing, as all I want to do is make my baby breathe again. But the first time he did this I tried to push on his tummy like the heimlich , but nothing came out. So I stuck my hand in his throat hoping to grab it out. I've heard that this could make it worse by lodging it in farther. I never actually get a stuck piece of food out by slamming my hand in his bulldoggy mouth, but it does make him gag and vomit up what ever is blocking him up.

When this happened the first time, I thought I was gonna die more that Murphy! I posted about my experience and Patti told me that I did do the right thing so I have been doing that since...and I think he's choked like 3 times now. But like I said, this last one wasn't like the first two. It was more like he was gagging on phlegm cuz he's was all snorty and stuff.

I dunno, but don't you just hate when our babies put us thru that stuff!?

Emily

I stick my finger down Leeloo's throat and yank whatever is in t

not the funnest thing (for either of us) but it beats the alternative!

Yikes, that sounds so scary Em...

what a trouble-maker that Moopster is - scaring you like that! Boys!

Actually Leeloo does that too.. she eats so fast that she sometimes throws up and it's whole kibbles covered in mucus that come up - so I started dividing her food at each meal so she has to eat half- then wait a few minutes, then she gets the other half... that seems to work. Because otherwise she's a little chew-less vaccum cleaner!

Re: Murphy gave me a scare....again! I need advice, please.

Emily,

So sorry you had to experience such a fright. Also, sorry that I don't have any advice for you.

I do however, have a question. How do you do the doggie heimlic or force a vomit? Sheldon is not a good chewer, either. Quite a few times, (most recently last week) Sheldon has choked on a treat he swallowed (rather than chewed). His sides get all sucked in, just like you described, and he is earily silent as he tries to cough it up. It terrifies me. What else can I do to help him if this happens again? The only thing I know is a sharp pat on the back. Thanks. Hope school is going well for you.

Joanna & Sheldon

Murph take it easy. Mom won't take your food

Lily does the same thing. Why do they do this. I hope he is ok now,.

THANK YOU

very much!

Put a big rock in the bowl

...it slows them down when the eat, as they have to eat around the rock.

Emily, quick note

I saw your post about Murphy when I just updated about Fluff. I'm at work so can't read all the replies, so may-be others have said the same.

Yes, an elongated palate can and will make them phlemy and gag on food.

Also, try wetting his food, so may be he won't get such a big mouthful of unchewed food he is trying to swallow, that it will be less likely to choke on it.

I'll check back tonight.
