Poor Skidmark is the most cold-natured dog I have ever owned. I have to make sure the heater is going full force before putting him in the car or he shivers so bad his collar rattles. I have spent the last 2 days wrapping pipes, buying floor heaters for the garage for the cats and an infrared light for the turtle. I have an electric blanket on my bed. I turn it on when I get home so the bed will be warm at bedtime. Usually the dogs are in the living room with me while I am on the computer. Not anymore. Everyone of them are laying on the bed now. I know all ya'll northerners are probably getting a kick out of this but HEY!! I live in Texas. We don't normally have temps in the teens here and it is going to stay that way till Sunday. Time to make a big pot of chili.
Skid waiting patiently before we left work today.
Hey, no worries Skid...
You're beautiful, and chilly bones just mean you have a warmer heart bud.

love that picture!
and yes im sorry i am laughing! But if its in the 20s I totally understand! Here that would be rather warm sometimes in the winter though. Sorry your going through so much cold. I have no heat in my bedroom, just the electric blanket which bruno loves!!!!Coarse he loves the woodstove too, anywere warm he can sleep. Hope it warms up soon for ya. Saw something on TV , an iquana was frozen, how sad, because of the cold. is your turtle outside? what kind?any pictures?
My guys have nice, thick wooly coats for the winter.
No need to blanket them with that kind of hair! My two mares have good blankets on because they have been sick for a long time. Both are healing, but not able to withstand this type of cold weather.
We don't have a barn yet, but I would not leave any type of heater in a barn if I did have one. It can overheat and cause a fire or blow a fuse and cause a fire or....probably would cause a fire:-) So no heaters for me. Plus, the horses own body heat warms the inside of an enclosed barn, so they stay pretty warm. Even so, I would have to blanket them if they were in stalls at night because they can't move around much to generate any energy to warm themselves on those really cold nights.

Where did you buy it?
sorry for all of the questions, but I am trying to find a way to provide warmth to some stray cats. It's supposed to get down to 12 to 18 degrees on the next three nights, and down to 22 tonite. Too late to do anything tonite but maybe I can find one for the next three nights.

Oh, if you don't mind my asking, how much do they cost? Thanks.

It's a heated mat the goes in the bottom of the crate and the
bed goes on top. It is like a heated mattress pad for dogs. It keeps them warm from underneath.

I agree Wendy...Skid has a really sweet expression.
What is a heated kennel?
is it just a regular dog kennel to which you attach a heater, or is it something that comes with a built-in heater?

We had a few small showers last night
so there were only a few wet spots that froze but with my luck I'm sure I will hit all of them.
I'm south of Houston on the coast
We are always warmer down here, but not this weekend. I rained bad this morning. I just hope all the water dried up because I have never in my life driven on ice.
Hate to see you all Southerners having to deal with all this nas
of which you are not familiar. We got another 6 inches today and 40mph winds--read big blizzard here. The state has pulled off all the plows until the wind goes down and the visibility clears. Add on the frigid temps and wind chills are in the -30 to -40 below ranges. Uncovered flesh will freeze in just a little time. Everything pretty much comes to a halt until it is over. Our horse have shelter and their own heavy winter shaggy coasts to keep them warm. The one that likes to walk over drifted fences go put in the barn before the storm came in. My dogs are warm and cuddled up in their heated kennels in the garage and house. My larder if full and I am having hot smoked pork hocks with beans tomorrow for lunch. Folks up this way are pretty used to this and are able to get by pretty well.

Yeah this weather is killing us! I am freezing and we are supposed to get a dusting of snow tonight. Both my kids were out sick the last week of school before the holidays. Monday was their first day back and they were both home with a stomach bug. If they are out of school tomorrow for icy roads or a sprinkling of snow, Im gonna scream!
Been making lots of hot chocolate here!
Where in Tx are you?
I'm in the DFW area and I am not liking this weather either!! LOL
What do you have to do for your horses when it gets this cold?
is there a heater in their barn? Do you have to put a blanket on each one?

Amen Denise. Man, I didn't think it was gonna be this way here!
But we are up here just shivering and teeth chattering away! Frozen water troughs, frozen ground. Frozen doggies! Ha ha! Talk about a bed full of warm bodies at night, my pups won't take NO for an answer in this weather!
Stay warm down there Girl!
Amy and Sophia
Make sure there are no cans of gas in the garage
or any other flammables that may ignite because of the floor heaters.

That weather is just crazy. I can't believe it is getting this cold, for this many days in a row, this far down South. I just went buy a second Lasko ceramic heater from Sam's. With two of them on at the same time, they are doing a fairly decent job of keeping my combined big family room/dining room area.
Deb also sent me a good link for ceiling fan heaters. I really like what I have read so far. If you're interested, here's the link:

Mack 'n' TMaeMack
We got this at a local farm store, Tractor Supply Company, and
if I remember it was around $50.00. It is a heavy rubber that has the cord attached and wrapped with a metal spring to discourage chewing. Hunters have them here for their hunting dogs.
