1. do you have your bullies microchipped? (if no, why?)
2. the Humane Society offers it at half the price as the vet - any reason NOT to do it there? (i'm a little paranoid about taking her to places with lots of pets/strays like the HS when she's only 8 1/2 weeks old)
p.s. She comes home tomorrow!!!! (:

Yikes... wow, mine was free
The breeder that I got my baby from had it done and he didn't charge me extra. Then when I called his vet to ask him some other questions, he said he does it for free. He said it was too important and he didn't want his patients to go without. I'm sure he somehow makes up the money.. But guess I was lucky!
I wrestled with that question too... (kinda long)
Until I talked to a couple of people (mostly bully owners). What convinced me was if my dog was ever lost or stolen there would be no clear way to identify him. Let's say he does end up at the shelter and a few people claim him... then there is not way for the shelter to know who belongs to who. Then I read a story about a dog who wandered off. A month passed and the owner gave up. He had posted signs and rewards everywhere, but got nothing. Then a month and a half after the dog got loose the animal shelter called him to say that he had been "taken care of" by another family until he got loose again and the shelter picked him up. The family came to claim him but the shelter had scanned him and found that the dog did not belong to the family and called the true owner. After that I was sold and had Henley chipped ASAP!

you can buy it online and go to the participating vet and have them chipped for 63.50 total.
they have a vet lookup on the site.

office visit
it's $40 for the visit and the rest is the cost for the chiping. I'm going to call around. Thanks!
Carolina & Lola
Not in your area, but...
Those prices are outrageous! The vets honestly want to charge you that much simply for injecting the microchip alone? Do they think they need to give a sedative or put the dog under anesthesia or something? I just can't imagine how they can justify a price like that?
I was lucky enough to have both Pepper & Grady chipped for free. Actually, Pepper's chip was free, but they asked for a donation. I had it done at a dog show microchip clinic. Grady's chip was done by his breeder before I brought him home. After the chips were done, I just had to complete the paperwork and send it in with the one-time registration fee.
Check your local humane societies and shelters, and also try to find out if any microchip clinics are planned for any upcoming local dog shows. I'd be happy to help you with this if you'd like?
Listen to this
I just called 3 different places and got a total cost of$138, $157 and $149.
Perhaps it's b/c I'm calling vets.
Did you guys go to shelters?
Carolina & Lola
Yeah I agree... call them back and make sure they quoted you for
They must have thought you were asking about something else. They MUST have.
I agree with the others.....that vet is a SCAM! Go to any shelte
they'll do it in about 2 mins and it won't be more than 20 bucks!
Emily
Wow! I'd call and make sure that you were given the right price!
I definitely don't have to go to the shelter for this, it's just
vets and I figure I should save where I can since there'll be more bullie-related costs coming my way. BUt I'm with you on the paranoia so maybe I'll just suck it up and do it at the vets, she's going on Saturday for a check up anyway.
Thanks!

Re: Microchip questions...
Our Rosie is microchipped...its a good thing to have done. Great for peace of mind.
Whoa!
I'd call around to vets in the area - and call beck to confirm that your vet really is charging $200 just to inject a microchip into a dog. I've NEVER seen a vet charge more than $30 for this service. It's no more time consuming or difficult than a routine vaccination!
Sharon
Definitely chip, but I'd wait . . .
until she gets at least one more shot under her belt.
All seven of my guys are chipped (one guy we got at 11 mos has 2 - oops!). I believe the only difference between shelters and vets giving the chip is that shelters do this as a community service, and may also receive a bit better rate on the scanners and chips.
Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but if you have to go to the shelter to get this done, I would recommend having at least one more shot before you do. At 8 1/2 weeks, she's only gotten one vaccination, and so is still susceptible to a lot of the bad stuff out there. Even then, I'd look to carry her in and out of the facility (same with the vet), as you never know who's been there before you and what they may be spreading.
Sharon
Sheesh! Drive here to CT! Ours was $25!
$200 is ABSURD! Can you check you shelters and local humane societies? They often times run specials...
My gosh!
Julia
To anyone who lives in New Jersey/ New York
do any of you know where I can have Lola microchipped for a reasonable cost? The vet near me charges over $200
Carolina & Lola
Lo-Jack for doggies? That's too funny!
but a perfect analogy.
Re: What does the chip do? Is there a tracking system in it? Stu
It gives each dog a number that can be scanned at most vets, humance societies, etc. That number corresponds with your information (like your name and address).
Emily
So if someone ever tries to steal your dog...it will look real suspicious! Or if you dog is ever out and gets picked up by the pound, it can save a lot of trouble becuase you will be contacted immediately!
It's better than a collar, becuase collars can come off or be removed. It's also better than a tattoo because, sadly, tatoos can be removed too.
It's like Lo-Jack for doggies!
It's just info in it with a number and if your bully were to show up at a vet or a pound or shelter, they could just scan her and get your info. If (god forbid) Molly were to ever go missing, you'd call the AKC Companion Recovery # they give you, register Molly and her # as missing and they'd put the wheels in motion.

It works! We're read stories!

(And it's the teeny size of a rice grain, inserted between the shoulder blades, in case you're wondering.)
What does the chip do? Is there a tracking system in it? Stupid

Bulldozer has it n/m

Wow $12 bucks!!!!........good deal.......n/m

Absolutely we have Grover chipped.
We had it done during his neuter at six months. It was $25 at our vet and thru the AKC.
I can't imagine why it would be BAD to do it thru the Humane society.

It's definitely a VERY good thing.
Julia
I just got M.J done yesterday
I feel that it is a good idea just for a little peice of mind. It only cost me $60, I thought it would be more. My vet froze M.J before she did it. Thank god, I had to leave the room. ( I hate needles ). Anyway I think it is a good idea!
Chantelle & M.J
DO IT IMMEDIATELY!
I got Murphy's done at the shelter for like $12...no shame in that...it's just an oversized shot that they give them. Nothing serious.
Emily
I think it's a great life saving thing that you can do for your bulldog. It is one sure way to identify that your dog is YOURS!
